Recommended oil grade, replaces TN 00-07-210

Background

All cars leaving the factory are filled with synthetic engine oil. These products contain components of very high quality to fulfil the demands of our turbo engines.

The choice of synthetic oil is based on demands for increased life expectancy and improved fuel economy to reduce impact on the environment. Using recommended oils avoids the tendency to build up residue inside the engine that can block the lubricating system, increase wear and damage engine components.

Engine performance: Lubricity and viscosity are of the utmost importance if you are to obtain optimum performance from Saab engines. It is therefore important to follow the oil recommendations. Thanks to the superior fluidic properties the recommended oils possess at low temperatures remote parts of the lubricating system can easily be reached, which means less engine wear.

Fuel economy: Fuel economy is improved by the use of oil with as low a viscosity as possible. Meanwhile, however, problems can arise with excess wear if the oil film becomes too thin due to low viscosity. Recommended oils maintain correct viscosity in different temperatures. Synthetic oil also reduces fuel consumption while the engine is warming up after starting.

Driveability: Synthetic Saab or Mobil oil ensures more reliable starting at low temperatures.

Durability: It is essential that oil properties are fully maintained during the period between oil changes. Certain oil additives are consumed too quickly, which results in internal residue that damages the engine and causes excessive wear. Saab and Mobil oils ensure that today's high demands on durability are met as long as the service schedule is followed.

One aspect that is often neglected is that if the car is driven mostly in town traffic with frequent starting and driving short stretches then the oil must be changed at shorter intervals. This is because fuel and condensation in such circumstances mixes with the oil, which cannot dispose of it when cold.

Environmental aspect: Lower fuel consumption means lower emissions, principally of carbon dioxide (CO2).

Service and oil changes: It is essential to follow oil change intervals specified in Saab service schedules in order to guarantee the service life of all the engine components and optimise engine performance. Fully synthetic oil is recommended when changing oil in cars that are exerted to demanding use at harsh temperatures.

Requirement specifications GM-LL-A-025 and GM-LL-B-025 contain a number of laboratory tests to establish the lubricating properties, resistance to oxidation and life expectancy in time and mileage of engine oil. The difference between a "normal" fully synthetic oil with requirements according to ACEA and API, and Saab and Mobil oils according to GM-LL-A-025 or GM-LL-B-025 is that the latter oils have higher demands on life expectancy in that the service interval has been increased to 2 years. Basic oil is therefore made of more stable components with additives with longer life expectancy.

Recommendation

Use Saab oils according to the following tables. See also WIS - Basic engine - Technical data - Engine oil.

Note that Mobil I, 0W-40 complying with GM-LL-B-025 must not be used in cars with engines of type V6 TiD. Recommended oil for petrol engines fulfils the requirements of API SH/SJ and ACEA A3/B3-98. Recommended oil for diesel engines fulfils the requirements of ACEA A3/B3, B4

For 9-3 (9440) Sport Sedan, only oils complying with requirement specification GM-LL-A-025 (Saab Turbo Oil 0W-30 Long Life Fully Synthetic) may be used in petrol cars or GM-LL-B-025 (Saab Diesel Oil 5W-40 Long Life Synthetic Blend) in cars with diesel engines. Saab Automobile AB has two separate oils that fulfil these requirements, while Mobil has one oil that can be used for both petrol and diesel engines.

The risks of using oils that do not fulfil GM-LL-A-025 as described above are great. If the oil grade is too low, there is a risk of either wear due to poor lubrication or deposits in the engine due to a prematurely aged oil that is not able to keep the engine clean. Eventually, this can lead to blockage of oil passages and engine damage. The timing chain is also one of the components that can be seriously damaged by poor oil quality. This will result in rattling in the timing chain and balancer shaft circuit.
