Exhaust system Exhaust system
Exhaust system Exhaust system |
General General |
The exhaust system is designed to lead out the engine exhausts with low flow-through resistance, low noise level and long service life.
It consists of four parts: front pipe (with catalytic converter on B234i/B204L), intermediate pipe (B234i/B204L) or catalytic converter (B206i/B258i), middle silencer and rear silencer. The middle silencer is of absorption type for all engine variants while the rear silencer is of absorption type for the turbo variant and of reflection type for the fuel injection variants. The exhaust system is corrosion protected in that all pipes are made from chromium steel. In addition, the silencers are made of corrosion-resistant 12% chromium steel sheet. All engine variants have cast exhaust manifolds except the B258i, which has a rear exhaust manifold of stainless steel.
The joints are of flange type (ball joints) with a two-part clamp tightened by two bolts. This makes replacement easier and ensures a good fit. None of the joints, except the one between the exhaust manifold and front pipe on B206i/B258i, is fitted with a gasket.
Mounting |
The exhaust system is secured in place by means of five rubber mountings (for certain variants there is also a steady bar between the engine and the front pipe). To give the car good ground clearance the exhaust system is run in a tunnel in the floor.
Heat shields |
Heat shields are fitted over the hottest zones. These shields are made of aluminium or galvanized sheet metal, depending on where they are fitted, and protect exposed areas from the heat. The number of heat shields fitted will depend on the engine variant for which the exhaust system is designed.
