Side airbag

Warning

Read carefully before starting work.


To remove



1. Ignition switch in the OFF position.

2. Slide the seat forwards as far as it will go.

3. Undo the rear of the seat, 2 bolts.

4. Slide the seat back and undo the two bolts in the front edge.

5. Tilt the seat back, cut the cable tie and unplug the 29-pin connector under the seat.

6. Unfasten the belt, if any.

7. Lift the seat out of the car.

8. Unfasten the cord that holds the lower edge of the backrest cover.


9. Remove the upholstery retaining batten at the bottom.

10. Pull the stiffening board out of the backrest upholstery.

11. Disconnect the airbag plug from the 29-pin connector under the seat. Release the cable by cutting the tie. Note the run of the cable under the seat, so as to facilitate re-assembly.

12. Unfasten the rear part of the backrest cover, by unfastening the cover battens along the sides, and fold the cover away to the side.


13. Remove the adjustment mechanism of the lumbar support.

14. Unfasten the cover batten along the edge of the rear part of the backrest frame and fold the cover away to the side.

15. Detach the two wire rods that hold the front lining at the bottom rear edge.

16. Unfasten the felt cover, on the airbag side at the backrest hinge, by unfastening the felt cover held on the hook in the Pullmaflex net.

17. Remove the plastic-coated resistance spring for SAHR.


18. Remove the side airbag, 3 nuts.

Note the run of the cable to the side airbag.

19. Lift out the side airbag.


To fit


Warning

Never repair and re-fit damaged seat covers. The strength of the seams is carefully calculated and must not be altered.



1. Fit the side airbag, 3 nuts.

Tightening torque: 6.5 Nm (4.8 lbf ft)

2. Fit the SAHR system's resistance spring as the mirror image of the spring on the other side.

3. Attach the felt cover to the hook in the Pullmaflex net.


4. Secure the two wire rods that hold the front cover at the bottom rear edge.

5. Secure the rear part of the backrest cover by fitting the cover battens along the edge on the rear of the backrest frame.

6. Fit the rear part of the backrest cover by fixing the cover battens along the sides.

Install the adjustment mechanism of the lumbar support.

7. Slide the stiffener board into its proper position.


8. Run the connecting cable of the side airbag through the hole in the backrest cover and plug it into the 29-pin connector under the seat.

9. Fix the cover batten at the lower edge

10. Fix the backrest cover at the lower edge by fitting the cord(s) on the underside.

11. Lift the seat into the car.


12. If the seat-belt has been taken off, re-attach it to the seat.

Slide the rails into the front keys.

Insert the front screws and run the seat forward.

Insert the rear screws.

Manually operated seat:

Check that the detents on the right and left sides have engaged.

Tighten the rear screws with a torque wrench.

Run the seat back and check that detents on the right and left sides have engaged. Tighten the front screws with a torque wrench.

Tightening torque 24 Nm (18 lbf ft)


Check the SRS system and control module with diagnostic tools according to the following:

With the ignition switched to the ON position, connect the diagnostic tool to the diagnostic socket under the dashboard. Clear any diagnostic trouble codes that are present.

Turn the ignition off and on again. Wait at least 10 seconds with the ignition on.

Check whether a diagnostic trouble code is shown:

If a diagnostic trouble code is shown:

Carry out the relevant fault diagnosis as described under the respective DTC.

If no diagnostic trouble code is shown:

The installation is successful. Disconnect the diagnostic tool.
