Test values Unit Min Max Description Use
Mixed Air Temperature Sensor

V/V

0

5

Voltage across NTC resistor

Checking leads and control module inputs.

Open circuit shows approx. 5 V.

If the input is grounded, approx. 0 V is shown.

Sun Sensor

V/V

0

5

The infrared part of the solar radiation is converted to a voltage. The voltage is sent from the sensor to the control module.

Checking the sensor, leads and control module input.

If sun light is missing, direct light from a 60W bulb at the sensor. Open circuit shows approx. 0 V.

Sensor Ground

V/V

0

5

All sensors are grounded via a resistor built into the control module. The control module senses the voltage across the resistor. The value must be below 0.1 V.

Checking leads and sensors:

The value must be below 0.1 V. A higher value indicates short-circuit to B+ in the leads to one of the sensors.

Coolant Temperature (Bus from MIU/EDC 15)

˚C/˚F

-40

150

Coolant temperature from Engine control module.

DICE turns off the A/C in case of defective sensor or excessive temperature.

Vehicle Speed (Bus from MIU)

km/h, mph

0

255

Vehicle speed from MIU. Left rear wheel sensor outputs an alternating current which frequency varies with the speed to ABS. ABS sends frequency modulated ground pulses to MIU

For fault diagnosis, it is sufficient to note if the speedometer is functioning. If it is OK, the value is also on the bus and therefore also in the ACC. ABS generates a diagnostic trouble code in case of wheel sensor malfunction.

Outdoor Temperature (Bus from SID)

˚C/˚F

-40

40

Outdoor temperature from SID

Shows actual outside temperature.

Indoor Temperature Sensor

V/V

0

5

Voltage across NTC resistor

Checking leads and control module inputs.

Open circuit shows approx. 5 V.

If the input is grounded, approx. 0 V is shown.

Indoor Temperature

˚C/˚F

10

40

Voltage across NTC resistor converted to temperature.

Note:

The value is greatly moderated.

Observe:

Min and max values.

The value must match the temperature on the sensor. Due to the value being reduced, it is not suitable for discovering intermittent circuit malfunctions.

Observe:

Min and max values.

Fan Control Voltage

V/V

0

5

Voltage that is sent to the fan control.

Note:

This voltage is the true pin voltage since it is read back by the control module.

Checking leads and control module output. The value should increase in proportion to selection of increased fan speed.

Also compare to the fan symbol on the display.

Note:

The value is of no use in case of a malfunction in the fan motor circuit or the fan control.

Air Distribution Flap Position

%/%

0

100

The calculated position of the flap. The value is dependent on how many pulses the control module has sent to the stepping motor from the calibrated end position. 0% is panel, 17% is panel/floor, 50% is floor, 75% is floor/defrost and 100% is defrost.

Shows which position the control module thinks that the damper is in. If this does not match the actual position, despite calibration, it indicates jamming of the damper, that it has detached from its drive or that the motor is defective.

Note:

During calibration, it is normal for extreme values, often several hundred percent, to appear on the display

Heater Flap Position

%/%

0

100

Calculated position of the flap. The value depends on how many pulses the control module sends to the stepping motor from the calibrated end position. 0% is max cold.

Shows which position the control module thinks that the damper is in. If this does not match the actual position, despite calibration, it indicates jamming of the damper, that it has detached from its drive or that the motor is defective.

Note:

During calibration, it is normal for extreme values, often several hundred percent, to appear on the display

Rear Window Heater

ON/OFF

0

1

ON is shown when DICE has grounded the relay output for the electrically heated rear window.

The symbol for the electrically heated rear window is shown on the display when ON. In case of malfunction of electrically heated rear window, see fault diagnosis in DICE.

A/C Compressor (Bus from MIU/EDC 15)

ON/OFF

0

1

ON is shown when the Engine control module activates the A/C relay.

If the ACC requests A/C and the Engine control module does not activate the relay, DICE has blocked A/C engagement.

Recirc Flap Position

FRESH AIR/RECIRC

0

1

Calculated position of the flap. The value depends on which polarity the motor received the last time it was activated by the control module.

Shows position of the flap. If this does not match actual situation, it indicates jamming of the flap, that it has detached from its drive or that the motor is defective.

Heat Exchange Valve

ON/OFF

0

1

ON is shown when the control module grounds the output which results in the solenoid valve applying a vacuum on the shut-off valve which in turn closes the coolant flow.

The control module closes the shut-off valve if the requested mixed-air temperature is the lowest possible for both zones. When ON, the coolant should stop circulating.

Button Pushed

YES/NO

0

1

Button Pushed on the ACC unit panel.

In case of suspected button malfunction, check that the control module notices that a certain button has been pressed.

Parking Heater

ON/OFF

0

1

ON is shown when the parking heater has been started.

Checking leads and control module input: ON should be shown when B+ is applied to control module pin 3.

A/C Out

ON/OFF

0

1

ON is shown when the ACC requests A/C engagement, the value is used by DICE.

If the outside temperature is above 1˚C, the engine has started and ECON is extinguished on the display, the value should be ON. If the compressor clutch does not engage, activate it in the engine management system and then check the blocking conditions in DICE.

Requested Temperature

˚C/˚F

15

27

Shows the requested temperature on the panel.

Shows the most important input value for temperature control.

Requested Compartment Temperature

˚C/˚F

10

40

Shows the temperature that the system has requested in the compartment. The value will normally differ slightly from that shown on the display. The difference is a correction with regards to outdoor temperature in order for the temperature to be experienced as correct.

Shows the temperature the system is to reach in the cabin.

Actual Compartment Temperature

˚C/˚F

10

40

Shows the temperature in the compartment. The value is calculated using the following input values: compartment temperature, outdoor temperature, time since the engine was last running, time since start, mixed-air temperature, fan speed and solar radiation.

Shows actual cabin temperature.

Deviation Requested - Actual Compartment Temperature

˚C/˚F

-15

15

Shows the difference between the actual compartment temperature and the temperature requested by the system.

Shows the difference between the set value and the actual value. The difference is the so-called control deviation range and is used to decide if the mixed-air temperature should be increased or decreased. A positive value means that it is colder than requested.

Observe:

Min and max values.

Requested Mixed Air Temperature

˚C/˚F

0

80

Shows the requested mixed-air temperature in order to be able to correct the deviation between actual value and the requested value for the compartment temperature.

Shows the set value. This mixed-air temperature is required to move the control deviation range for cabin temperature closer to zero.

Observe:

Min and max values.

Actual Mixed Air Temperature

˚C/˚F

0

80

Voltage across the NTC resistor converted to temperature.

Note:

The value is greatly moderated.

The value must match the temperature by the sensor. Since the value is reduced, it is not suitable for detecting intermittent circuit malfunctions.

Observe:

Min and max values.

Deviation Requested - Actual Mixed Air Temperature

˚C/˚F

-40

40

Shows the difference between actual mixed-air temperature and the mixed-air temperature requested by the system.

Observe:

Min and max values.

Shows the difference between the set value and the actual value. A positive value indicates that the mixed-air temperature is lower than requested.
