Evaporator

Evaporator

Removing

Important

If the evaporator is of the type with one-piece pipe between the evaporator and the lead-through in the bulkhead, the pipe must be cut when removing. A new evaporator must then be fitted.

1. Drain refrigerant from the A/C system, see .

2. Remove the glove box. See 8:2 Interior.

3. Remove the side panel from the centre console.

4. Cars with airbag on passenger side:

Remove the knee guard.

5. Remove the air duct on the floor.

6. Remove the air duct to the panel side vent.

7. Cars with automatic transmission:

Remove the automatic transmission control module from the bulkhead bracket and leave it suspended by the cabling.

8. Remove the bracket.

9. Remove the cabling from the dashboard.

Open the cable ties and move the cables to one side.

10. Turn down the carpeting and remove the protective cover.

11. Remove the bolts securing the fan control module (cars with ACC).

12. Remove the end cover on the climate control unit. The end cover must be screwed into position when fitting.

13. Unplug the electric connection and remove the anti-freeze sensor.

14. Remove the bolts securing the A/C pipes PAD-connection to the expansion valve. The bolt is accessible from the engine compartment.

15. Cut the pipes using plate shears and pull the evaporator out of the climate control unit.

Fitting

1. Fit the evaporator in the climate control unit. Lubricate the upper part of the evaporator with vaseline if necessary. Fill compressor oil, see .

2. Fit new O-rings on the pipe connections at the evaporator. Lubricate the O-rings with synthetic vaseline.

3. Fit the expansion valve. There are adapter pipes with block from the evaporator out to the engine compartment.

4. Tighten the expansion valve retaining bolts alt. bolts securing the block.

Tightening torque:

Expansion valve 5 Nm (3.7 lbf ft)

Block 20 Nm (14.8 lbf ft)

5. Tighten the bolt in the engine compartment that secures the A/C pipes PAD-connection to the expansion valve alt. block.

Tightening torque:

Expansion valve 5 Nm (3.7 lbf ft)

Block 20 Nm (14.8 lbf ft)

6. Connect the anti-freeze sensor to the low-pressure pipe with clips.

7. Refit the end cover on the climate control unit and tighten the bolts. Turn the ventilation fan to max speed and check that no condensation leaks from the evaporator. Fit a new seal between the end cover and the climate control unit if needed.

8. Refit the fan control module and tighten the bolts (applies to cars with ACC).

9. Refit the protective cover.

10. Connect the cabling for the dashboard. Secure the cabling with cable ties.

11. Cars with automatic transmission:

Tighten the bracket for the automatic transmission control module to the bulkhead.

12. Fit the control module in the bracket.

13. Fit the air duct for the dashboard side vent.

14. Fit the floor air duct.

15. Cars with passenger airbag: Fit the knee guard and tighten the nuts.

16. Fit the centre console side panel.

17. Refit the glove box. See 8:2 Interior.

18. Vacuum pump the A/C system and fill refrigerant, see .
