Removal of pistons (in situ)

Removal of pistons (in situ)

(Cylinder head removed)

1. Remove any carbon deposits from the top of the cylinder bores.

2. Using the lifting beam, part no. 83 94 850, hook the lifting cable, part no. 87 92 251, to the gearbox. Disconnect the oxygen sensor cable.

3. Raise the car and drain the engine oil. Remove the front exhaust pipe, the front wheels and the air shields.

4. Remove the track rod end nuts from both sides and remove the rear engine mounting. Use 89 96 696 Puller . Position a lifting table under the engine. Raise the lifting table, undo the other bolts and lower the subframe.

5. Remove the protective plate and oil sump. Leave the guide sleeve in the cylinder block. Wipe up any oil that has dripped out.

6. Remove the big-end caps and fit the guide sleeves, part no. 75 19 531, onto the studs. Push the pistons and connecting rods out of the cylinders. Note the markings on the pistons and connecting rods so that they can be refitted in their original positions. Loosely fit the bearing shells and caps on the connecting rods so the sets do not get mixed.

Important

If one connecting rod is to be changed to a newer type (part no. 91 97 617), all the connecting rods must be changed or the difference in weight will become too great.

7. Remove the gudgeon pin locking ring and tap out the gudgeon pin with a plastic mallet and drift. Remove the crankshaft.
