Checking the fuel pressure regulator (B204i/L/E/R)

Warning

Removal of the fuel pressure regulator involves partial dismantling of the car's fuel system. The following points must therefore be observed in connection with this work:

Work only in a well-ventilated area! If approved equipment for the extraction of fuel vapours is available, be sure to use it.

Wear suitable gloves! Prolonged contact with fuel can cause skin irritation or dermatitis.

Keep a class BE fire extinguisher close at hand! Beware of sparks caused by short circuits and when connecting and disconnecting leads in electrical circuits.

No smoking anywhere in the vicinity.

Important

To minimize any residual fuel pressure, remove the fuel pump fuse no. 32 while the engine is idling. Turn off the ignition once the engine has stopped.

1. Connect the fuel pressure gauge equipment, special tool no. 83 93 852, to the pressure side of the fuel rail. Use special tool 83 95 261 to separate the fuel delivery line.

2. Remove the vacuum hose from the pressure regulator and connect the vacuum pump.

3. Start the fuel pump. Use battery voltage from fuse in (no. 4) coupled to fuse out (no. 32) in the fuse panel. Use jumper lead no. 83 93 886.

4. Check the reading at atmospheric pressure. It should be 3 bar (43 psi).

5. Increase the vacuum in the pressure regulator with the vacuum pump, special tool (45) 30 14 883. The system pressure should now drop with the same amount as shown on the pressure gauge, see for values.

6. The following applies to turbo engines:

Pump up pressure in the pressure regulator with the vacuum pump. The system pressure should now increase with the same amount as shown on the pressure gauge. See for values.

7. Disconnect the test equipment and fit the fuel delivery line.
