Background

The Trionic T7 engine control modules manufactured before 6 December 1999 have rubber supports for the circuit board that are faulty. These supports contain substances that can accelerate oxidization, which in turn can lead to open circuits on the circuit board. This can produce symptoms such as starting problems and the engine running unevenly. The Check Engine lamp may light up and the car may go into limp-home mode.

Edition 3 of MI 291-2217 should be carried out before this procedure is performed.

Symptom description

Procedure

Edition 3 of MI 291-2217 should be carried out before this procedure is performed.

Check box C4 on the modification identity plate before taking any action. Continue as follows if the box is not marked.

Check whether the Trionic T7 engine control module is manufactured before 6 December 1999 (year 1999, day 340) as follows:

1. Connect Tech 2 to the car's data link connector. Turn the ignition ON.

2. Select "Diagnostics" (F0) from the main menu.

3. Select "Model Year" and "Vehicle Type".

4. Select "Engine" from the menu.

5. Select "Trionic 7".

6. Select "Date of Manufacture"

7. If the control module is manufactured on 6 December 1999 (1999 day 340) or later, no action need be taken.

If the control module is manufactured before 6 December 1999 (1999 day 340), change the control module.

(Example: Year 1999, day 001 = 1 January 1999. Year 1999, day 365 = 31 December 1999)

8. Turn the ignition OFF.

9. If the control module is to be changed, see WIS, Engine - Trionic T7 LEV - Adjustment/replacement - Control module.

Programming the immobilizer code

1. Connect Tech 2 to the car's data link connector. Turn the ignition ON.

2. Select "Diagnostics" (F0) from the main menu.

3. Select "Model Year" and "Vehicle Type"

4. Select "Body" from the menu.

5. Select "TWICE" (Theft Warning Central Electronics)

6. Start programming of the immobilizer by selecting "Immobilization" (F2) from the menu.

7. Select "Trionic 7"

8. Follow the instructions on Tech 2. The procedure is complete when the message "Immobilizer code programmed" is displayed.

9. Erase any diagnostic trouble codes. Fuse 28 may need to be removed and refitted for communication with Tech 2 to be possible.

Checking and resetting

1. Switch off Tech 2 and turn the ignition OFF.

2. Start the engine.

3. If the engine does not start, turn the ignition key to OFF, then remove and refit fuse 28.

4. Start the engine. Depress the accelerator and then check if any new diagnostic trouble codes have been generated. Rectify and erase any diagnostic trouble codes.

5. Turn the ignition OFF and wait 10 seconds. Check that the throttle is not in limp-home mode as follows:

5.a. Remove the upper engine cover.

5.b. Remove the cover from the throttle body.

5.c. Turn the pedal arm clockwise.

5.d. Check that the throttle arm does not make the reciprocal movement when the pedal arm is turned.

5.e. To end limp-home mode, if necessary, see WIS - Engine - Trionic T7 - Adjustment/replacement - Resetting triggered limp-home solenoid.

5.f. Fit the cover over the throttle body and the upper engine cover.
