Locking/unlocking
Saab 9-3 is standard equipped with central locking system for all markets.In each door there is a lock unit, which in the front doors consists of a lock cylinder, microswitch, electric motor and lock. The function of the central locking system is controlled by the TWICE control module. Locking/unlocking of the central locking system is possible by using a key, remote control or the button on the centre console. Convertible models do not have the button on the centre console, the central locking system can instead be operated with the lock buttons in the doors. The central locking system cannot be operated with the remote control when the key is in the ignition.
The central locks can be operated both from the driver's door and the passenger door. The lock has a free-floating lock cylinder, which means that the cylinder will only spin around if the correct key is not used or if someone tries to break into the car.
The central locking system cannot be unlocked from the inside with the lock button in the driver's door, but only with the button on the centre console. The lock buttons in the doors only lock or unlock each respective door.
The rear doors are provided with child safety catches that are activated with a small handle by the door lock. When the child safety catch is activated, the door can only be opened from the outside, provided the lock button is not pushed down.
The central locking system motors are supplied with power via fuse 25 to pin 47 on the TWICE control module, and when activated, TWICE will check the power flowing through the motors.
Mechanical opening of the central locking system
In cases when the lock motor is de-energized, the lock must be “emergency opened“ mechanically. Turn the key past the normal unlocking angle and the lock motor will unlock at the same time as the door. In cases when the power supply has been cut abruptly, the alarm will be activated (if the car is fitted with alarm).Emergency opening from the centrally locked position is possible both from driver's door and passenger door.
Separate unlocking
For the US and CA markets, the cars are standard equipped with separate unlocking of the driver's door. Separate unlocking means that the door is first unlocked separately. The remaining doors are unlocked when the key is turned a second time, when the button on the remote control is activated a second time as well as when the button on the centre console is pushed a second time. In case of key opening from the passenger door, the passenger door is separately unlocked first.The cars for these markets are equipped with a lock motor that cannot be provided with TSL (Theft Security Lock), that is, the end position of the motor cannot be blocked.
TSL-locking
All markets except US/CA is equipped with TSL-locking (Theft Security Lock). When the theft prevention lock (TSL) is activated, all locks are blocked and the doors cannot be unlocked by the lock button in the door or on the centre console. TSL cannot be activated when a door is ajar.If the car is locked TSL-locked using remote control or key, “locked from the outside“, the central locking system will unlock the car when the key is turned ignition position ON. This is a safety feature to prevent someone from driving off in a TSL-locked car.
The cars on the US and CA markets are equipped with a lock motor that cannot be locked with TSL, that is, the end position of the motor cannot be blocked.
If the power supply to the lock motors should be interrupted, the door can be opened in a secondary way. By turning the key past the normal unlocking angle, the powerless motor can be bypassed. The motor remains locked and in cases where the power has been suddenly interrupted, the alarm will be activated (if the car is equipped with an alarm).
Emergency opening from the TSL-locked position is only possible from the driver's door.
Overheating protection
In case of repeated locking and unlocking, an overheating protection is activated and prevents locking, however, the car can be unlocked. The overheating protection is activated after approximately 5 new lock/unlocking actions. After that, 30 seconds must elapse before 2-3 lock/unlocking actions are allowed. After approximately 2 minutes, the overheating protection is reset and 5 new lock/unlocking actions are possible. The limits of the overheating protection vary somewhat, depending on the body type (3/5D and convertible).Keys and remote controls
Two keys and two remote controls are supplied with the car, but two more of each kind can be manufactured and programmed. This means that there can be no more than a maximum of four keys/remote controls for each car. In addition to these keys, a key blank is also supplied for emergency operation of the central locking system. This key has no transponder, which makes it impossible to start the car.Press the remote control button for tailgate opening when the key is in the ignition ON position to check how many remote controls/transponders that are programmed. The number of programmed remote controls/transponders are shown on the SID.

Certain central locking functions are programmed according to market specifications. For others, there can be legal stipulations governing them and they must not be re-programmed. Functions can also be programmed to customer requirements. See the following table.
