Piston rings

Piston rings

Matching to a new or rebored cylinder

1. Push the piston rings down into the cylinder one by one, using a piston to position them correctly.

2. Measure the ring gap with a feeler gauge as shown. If necessary, widen the gap by means of a special file. For correct gap sizes, see .

Matching to a worn cylinder

1. Push the piston rings down into the cylinders one by one all the way down to the lower dead centre position, as the cylinder bore is narrowest there. Use a piston to get the ring into the correct position.

2. Measure the ring gap with a feeler gauge as shown. If necessary, widen the gap by means of a special file. For correct gap sizes, see .

Fitting piston rings onto the piston

1. Clean the grooves in the piston for the piston rings using an old ring.

2. Check the piston ring clearance in the respective grooves in the piston. For measurements, see .

3. Use a piston ring clamp when fitting the rings onto the piston, see illustration. The lower compression ring must be fitted so that the side marked "TOP" is facing upwards.

4. Rotate the piston rings so that the working gaps are displaced 120°, see illustration.
