Upper timing chain tensioner

Upper timing chain tensioner

To remove

1. Place the car on a lift, put covers over the wings and detach the negative cable from the battery.

2. Remove the rear centre nut securing the front exhaust pipe to the turbocharger.

3. Remove the air cleaner with mass air flow sensor and hoses from the turbocharger and camshaft cover.

4. Raise the car, remove the lower engine cover, the cover in the right-hand wheel housing and the front right wheel.

5. Remove the remaining nuts between the turbocharger and the front exhaust pipe.

6. Relieve the tension on the belt tensioner by turning it anticlockwise (towards the rear of the car) with a 19 mm spanner and lift off the belt.

7. Remove the belt tensioner.

8. Lower the car, place a jack with wooden block under the oil sump and carefully raise the engine to take the strain off the right-hand engine mounting.

9. Dismantle the right-hand engine mounting from the engine and the body.

10. Remove the engine mounting (the bottom bolt does not need to be removed completely) and raise the engine further.

Important

Make sure nothing is damaged when the engine is moved.

11. Dismantle the upper timing chain tensioner.

To fit

1. Before fitting a new chain tensioner of the old type, check that it has been released; if not, tap the trigger lightly using a hammer for example. Fit the chain tensioner for the upper timing chain using a new gasket.

Tightening torque: 60 Nm (44 lbf ft).

2. Fit the right-hand engine mounting bracket on the engine and tighten the engine mounting on the engine.

Tightening torque: 47 Nm (35 lbf ft).

Carefully lower the engine and remove the jack.

3. Make sure the engine is suspended evenly and tighten the right-hand engine mounting.

Tightening torque: 47 Nm (35 lbf ft).

4. Apply Molycote 1000 on the turbocharger studs.

5. Raise the car, position the front part of the exhaust pipe with a new gasket and mount new nuts.

6. Tighten the front exhaust pipe to the turbocharger.

Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18.5 lbf ft).

7. Fit the belt tensioner, tightening the top bolt first.

Tightening torque: 42 Nm (31 lbf ft).

Tighten the bottom bolt.

Tightening torque: 23 Nm (17 lbf ft).

8. Fit the multigroove V-belt on all the pulleys. Relieve the tension on the belt tensioner by turning it anticlockwise (towards the rear of the car) with a 19 mm spanner and fit the belt on its pulley. Make sure the belt is positioned correctly on all the pulleys.

9. Refit the lower engine cover, the cover in the right-hand wheel housing and the wheel.

Tightening torque: 110 Nm (81 lbf ft).

Lower the car to the floor.

10. Refit the air cleaner with mass air flow sensor and hoses.

11. Tighten the remaining nuts between the turbocharger and the front exhaust pipe.

Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18.5 lbf ft).

12. Connect the negative cable to the battery.

13. Adjust the clock in the car and press 5 times on the remote control lock/unlock button.
