Ignition coil, spark/triggering

The ignition coil in the Motronic 2.10.3 is a conventional design for electrical ignition systems with low resistance. The ignition coil supplies the spark plugs with high voltage, which when fully loaded reaches approx. 30 000 Volts.

The ignition coil is controlled by an ignition output stage, which is integrated in the control module. The ignition coil has two sockets with the pins + 15 and -1 but only one socket is used.

Via pin 1 in the control module, the ignition output stage connection to the ignition coil pin 1 is grounded or "opened" so the ignition coil can generate a spark. The triggering of this signal is instantly controlled by the engine load (Tq) and engine speed (RPM).

At idling speed the frequency on pin 1 is approx. 30-32 Hz.

Which of the cylinders that is to receive a spark is determined by the distributor.
