Adaptive shifting programs
Adaptive shifting programs |
Adaptive shifting programs are selected automatically depending on the engine load. The function is available in the normal program.
Shifting occurs at higher engine rpms and the gear is engaged for longer if the control module senses that the load does not decrease. These shifting programs are in place to avoid unnecessary up and downshifting, for example when driving on long uphill grades with a trailer, and also to avoid overheating the transmission fluid.
Adaptive shifting programs are selected automatically if the transmission fluid becomes overheated in order to spare the transmission from serious damage and also to decrease the transmission fluid temperature. Activation occurs when the temperature exceeds 150 °C.
The adaptive shifting programs are not activated at speeds above 150 km/h. If an adaptive shifting program is active when the speed increases to above 150 km/h, the program is maintained until the control module senses that a more suitable shifting pattern can be activated.

Adaptive shifting programs are disengaged if:
• |
SPORT or WINTER program is selected. On cars with buses, only if the WINTER program is selected.
|
• |
the ignition switch is turned to the ON or OFF position
|
• |
The load decreases so much that an adaptive shifting pattern is no longer required.
|
• |
CHECK GEARBOX lamp lights up.
Temperature program 1 |
• |
If the gearbox fluid temperature rises to 130°, Lock-Up will be engaged in 3rd and 4th gear. Engaging Lock-Up prevents slip in the torque converter, which makes the temperature drop. The shifting points are also changed so that upshifting takes place at a higher engine speed and downshifting at a lower engine speed than when using the normal program.
Temperature program 1 will not work when: -WINTER program is selected -Limp-home is active Disengaged when: -temperature has decreased to 115 degrees |
• |
Temperature program 2
If the gearbox fluid temperature rises to 145°, Lock-up will be activated in 2nd gear. This may happen, for example, when driving uphill towing a caravan. Activating Lock-up prevents slip in the torque converter, which makes the temperature drop. Temperature program 2 will not work when: -WINTER program is selected -Limp-home is active Disengaged when: -temperature has dropped to 135 degrees |
• |
Temperature program 3
If the temperature should rise to 150°, the engine torque will be reduced to 200Nm. Temperature program 3 is disengaged when: -temperature has decreased to 140 degrees and stable for 5 seconds If these programs do not alleviate the problem and the temperature rises to 170 degrees, the "Info display" lamp lights up and the message TRANSMISSION OVERHEATING is displayed on the SID. Diagnostic trouble code P0218 can be read with Tech 2. If this trouble code is displayed, the transmission fluid must be changed. |
