Selector lever in D and 3
Primary shaftThe input shaft rotates clockwise and is connected to the rear planetary gear train's (P1) ring gear by clutch C1. The result is that the input shaft and the rear planetary gear train's ring gear rotate clockwise at the same speed.
Freewheel F1 and brakes B1 and B2 prevent the sun wheel from rotating.
The inner planet gear moves clockwise round the sun wheel at the same time as it rotates clockwise.
Freewheel F2 freewheels.
The planet carrier and the driving intermediate gear rotate clockwise as a unit at a lower speed than the input shaft. The speed is higher than in 1st gear.
Secondary shaft
Since the driving intermediate gears rotate clockwise, the driven intermediate gear and the lower planetary gear train's (P3) ring gear rotate anticlockwise as a unit.
Clutch C3 connects the planet carrier and sun wheel together.
The planetary gear train's ring gear, sun wheel, planet carrier and final drive pinion rotate anticlockwise as a unit at a higher speed than in 2nd gear.
