Fifth bow latch motor and relay

Fifth bow latch motor and relay

A direct current motor controlled by the STC control module via a relay opens and closes the latches that lock the fifth bow to the soft top cover. The motor is positioned on the underside of the soft top cover and is connected to the fifth bow latch via control rods. The motor also drives the movement of the swivel covers at the front of the soft top cover via the swivel wires from the latches. The rotational direction of the motor is reversed by switching the polarity of the motor connections.

The relay that supplies the motor is located in a relay holder inside the rear side upholstery on the right side. The relay switch-over connections that control the rotational direction of the motor are supplied with power at pin 1 from fuse 7 (22a) and is power grounded via pin 5 at grounding point G39. The relay is activated by +54 current from fuse 7 (22a) to pin 2 and is signal grounded via pin 6 and communication on the VR-bus occurs on pin 8.

The STC control module controls the relay through two messages on the VR bus.

To start the open function, it sends the message “Fifth Bow Latch Motor Open”, unit ON/OFF.

To start the close function, it sends the message “Fifth Latch Motor Close, unit ON/OFF.

For opening, the motor is powered from relay pin 3 and grounded via pin 4. For closing, the motor is powered from relay pin 4 and grounded via pin 3.

The relay for the fifth bow latch motor and relays for all side windows have the same design and for this reason the relay is programmed to its position “Fifth bow latch motor”. When changing a relay, it is necessary that the relay is programmed using the diagnostics tool. At both fifth bow latches, there are microswitches that informs the control module if the fifth bow is in lock position and is ready for locking.
