Engine coolant level sensor

Engine coolant level sensor

General

The coolant level sensor is located on the bottom of the expansion tank. The sensor fits into the hollow column on the outside of the tank.

The SID unit supplies B+ to the level sensor via pin 22 and the sensor is grounded to grounding point G33P or G34S (LHD or RHD respectively). At its normal level, the float arm is level with the switch and the magnet in the float arm closes the circuit, grounding pin 22 on the SID unit. At a low level, the circuit to ground is broken.

The function produces a CHECK message on the SID unit display (30 second delay). See .

Diagnostics

If there is an open circuit to the coolant level sensor, the text message “FILL COOLANT FLUID” is displayed even if the coolant level is correct.

If there is a short to ground, the CHECK message will not be displayed even if the coolant level is low.

The SID unit will not generate a diagnostic trouble code.
