Depending on the pressure built up by the pump and the selector lever position, the hydraulic control system controls the hydraulic pressure that actuates the torque converter clutch and other clutches and brakes to suit the current type of driving.
There are 4 control valves on the valve housing. Valves S1 and S2 are activated by being energized from TCM and control the shifting valves for shifting gear. TCM uses information on the input and output speeds of the gearbox and the position of the accelerator pedal to shift gear at the correct moment.
Solenoid SL is activated when supplied with power from TCM. When activated, the Lock Up function locks in the torque converter to provide direct drive. TCM activates the Lock Up function in 3rd and 4th gear with regards to accelerator pedal position and vehicle speed. Under extreme driving conditions when adaptive shifting programs are active, it is possible to drive with Lock Up in 2nd gear instead of 3rd gear without Lock Up.
Solenoid ST is supplied with PWM-controlled current. System pressure is regulated so that it is proportional to engine torque, resulting in improved shifting performance and reduced mechanical wear and tear on the transmission. The TCM uses information on the current engine torque and selected gear to control system pressure.
