Update of OnStar system, English version

Customer Satisfaction Campaign 154 24

Cars in stock must be rectified before delivery.

A personal communication must be sent to the owners of cars already delivered requesting them to get in touch with the nearest Saab Dealer as soon as possible to have the fault rectified.

Cars affected

Saab 9-3 (9440) M03 with Vehicle Identification Number within the range 31003367-31045153

Not all cars are affected, see separate information.

Background

The car needs to be updated with new software, in order to improve the functionality of the OnStar system.

The new software provides the following improvements:

- more secure shut down of the system

- longer time (48 h), that the car can be activated from OnStar

- less power consumption with the ignition key in the LOCK position.

Procedure

This procedure describes updating the OnStar system with the English language version. To update the OnStar system with the French language version, see MI 391-2408.

Note

In order to perform this work the following special tools are required:

- Genesis, Saab OnStar 1

- Tech2 with 32 Mb card

- CANdi box

Important

It is extremely important that the measures are carried out in the prescribed order.

SPS programming must not be interrupted due to a loosened diagnostics cable or insufficient battery voltage, for example.

The car"s power consumption is high during control module programming. Always connect a battery charger during SPS programming.

The battery charger must be able to provide 20 A. The charging voltage for the battery charger may not exceed 16 V as the electronics in the car may be damaged.

Do not activate any switches in the car e.g. opening/closing doors or windows, etc. Programming could be interrupted and the control module could be damaged to such an extent that it is no longer functional.

During SPS programming, all normal bus communication is stopped. As a result, the main fuse boxes assume Limp Home mode and switch on the dipped beams and rear lighting.

In order to avoid programming faults (not fault codes) being transferred to other cars the programming of each car must be completed (Genesis light Green) before Genesis is used to program additional cars. If the programming is not successful (Genesis indicate faults, see table in step 8), phone Saab technical support in the USA or Canada for further assistance. Do not contact the OnStar call center with programming issues for this Campaign.

Programming and functional testing

Note

The entire procedure is indicated on the checklist (Supplement 1), which can be used as a guide during the entire process. One copy of the checklist should be printed out for each car receiving an update.

Important

Cars in transport mode: Fit the transport fuse (60A maxi fuse) in position F37 in the fuse box in the engine bay (UEC).

1. Remove fuse 23 (40A maxi fuse) from the dashboard fuse box.

2. Connect the battery charger to the car battery.

Warning

The visible red light is laser class 1. Do not look directly into the optical fibre or the control module connector at a close distance. Distances of less than 20 m between eye and light source can result in damage to the eye.

Prior to disconnecting the telematics (CU) unit, the following procedure MUST be followed.

Open trunk lid

Close all windows

Close all doors (leave trunk and hood open)

Lock the vehicle doors using the remote

Wait 60 seconds

Disconnect the telematics (CU) unit from underneath the parcel shelf from inside the trunk

Note

If the doors are unlocked or opened during this period the above steps must be repeated.

3. Failure to follow this process may result in an "OnStar Malfunciton" message being displayed in SID and DTC U1500 08 sotred in the CU which will make replacement of the CU necessary. Wait for at least 1 minute and then connect the connector to the unit.

Note

The programming must be started at the latest 5 minutes after the telematics unit has been restarted.

4. Set the windscreen wiper lever to "position 0" (rest position).

5. Turn the ignition key to ON.

6. Wait to connect Genesis until the message "Checking..." clears from SID.

7. Connect Genesis to the car"s data link connector within 5 minutes after the telematics unit has been restarted.

Note

Genesis is a fully automatic programming tool used for SPS programming and for certain other parameters in several of the car"s control modules. The programming starts automatically when Genesis is connected to the data link connector.

8. Check the status of the lamps and carry out the correct procedure in accordance with the tables below.

Note

If the programming does not start when Genesis is connected to the data link connector, turn the ignition key to OFF, disconnect Genesis and restart from step 3.

Reset the telematics unit (CU) by removing the 20-pin connector from the unit, wait for at least 5 minutes and then connect the connector to the unit. Restart the programming (from step 5). If this is not successful, call Saab technical support in the USA or Canada for further assistance. NOTE: In order to avoid faults being transferred to other cars the programming of each car must be completed (without faults remaining) before Genesis is used to program further cars.

9. Disconnect Genesis from the car after successful programming (the green lamp lights up).

10. Disconnect the battery charger from the car and close the hood.

11. Fit fuse 23 into the dashboard fuse box.

12. Remove the key from the ignition.

13. Lock the car from the outside. The car"s windows, doors, hood and trunklid must be closed.

Note

The alarm is activated. Make sure that the alarm is not triggered.

If the alarm triggers, de-activate the alarm and continue from step 13.

14. Wait for 2 minutes (the control modules read in new data).

15. Unlock the car.

16. Insert the key into the ignition and turn to ON.

17. Check the functionality of the OnStar system in accordance with the following (17.a - 17.c):

17.a. Activate the audio system by pressing the ICM unit (infotainment system control panel) ON button . Verify radio sound in the speaker system.

17.b. Dealer-stock cars:

Press the blue “OnStar Services button” to start the audible OnStar demo message. During the message, press the blue “OnStar Services button” again to connect to the OnStar Call Center. Explain to the advisor that you are testing the OnStar software update, and ask the advisor to verify the location of the car.

Cars returned by customers:

Press the blue “OnStar Services button” to connect to the OnStar Call Center. Explain to the advisor that you are testing the OnStar software update, and ask the advisor to verify the location of the car.

Note

Step 17.b may take a few moments while the car’s on-board telephone module connects to the local cellular network.

17.c. After the Call Center advisor has verified the location of the car, end the call by pressing the "White dot button" .

18. If the OnStar Call Center is not reached within 10 minutes, call Saab technical support in the USA or Canada for further assistance.

19. Check the time and date in SID; adjust if necessary.

20. Read the "Days Until Service" in SID. If the value is 0 or 720, use Tech2 and carry out the following:

- Start the service application in Tech2 under the menu All \ Service \ Service Data \ Advanced Service Functions \ Change Days and Distance .

- State the number of " Days SINCE Intermed. Service ", refer to the example of the service screen below. Calculate the number of days since the intermediate service, refer to the service manual. If the car has not yet been serviced, calculate the number of days since the delivery service.

Example of service screen in Tech2

Next Main Service 029832 Miles
Next Intermediate Service 014379 Miles
Days SINCE Intermed. Service 999 Days
Next Main Serv. Occasion 1

21. Cars with pinch protection: Set pinch protection for the window lifts.

22. Erase all diagnostic trouble codes using Tech2.

23. Read off diagnostic trouble codes using Tech2 in order to confirm that no faults remain.

Note

If a list is displayed in Tech2 where all control modules are "added", carry out " Add" ICM using Tech2.

Check that all units are connected by reading out diagnostic trouble codes one more time.

24. Disconnect Tech2 from the car"s data link connector.

25. If the car is to be reset to transport mode: Remove the transport fuse F37 (60A maxi fuse) from the fuse box in the engine bay (UEC).
