Connector H42-1, 2 and 3, pin/sleeve replacement

Warning
|
Airbag system cables must not be repaired. They are to be replaced in their entirety.

|
1.
|
Remove the battery cover.
|
2.
|
Remove the battery with battery cooling pipe, bonnet switch and main fuse box.
|

Unplug the TCM connector and the connector under the control module.
|
4.
|
Remove the battery tray.
|
5.
|
Pull out the catch and unplug the 42-pin connector.
|
1.
|
Detach the connector from the bracket.
|
2.
|
Cut off the cable tie.
|
3.
|
Carefully remove the secondary catch.
|
4.
|
Remove the seal.
|
5.
|
Undo the pin catch by pressing in the extraction tool (part no. 85 80 151).
|
6.
|
Pull out the cable with the pin.
|
7.
|
Cut of the lead at the pin.
|
8.
|
If the lead is not long enough, splice it as follows:
|
|
8.1.
|
Strip the insulation off of the leads.
|
|
8.2.
|
Fit a shrink tube with adhesive on the line.
|
|
8.3.
|
Fit sleeve (0.5-1.0 mm²), using the blue pliers from 86 12 939 Toolbox, wiring harness.
Note
|
Leads with 0.35 mm² are doubled over and crimped together at both ends.
|
|
|
8.4.
|
Place the shrink tube over the sleeve.
|
|
8.5.
|
Heat the shrink tube until it is secured.
|
9.
|
Place the seal on the lead. Use a new seal if necessary.
|
10.
|
Strip 4 mm of the lead's insulation.
|
11.
|
Search for the connector in the spare parts catalogue/EPC to find the part number of the pin to be used.
|
12.
|
Fit the pin on the lead using olive green pliers (0.35-0.75 mm²) from 86 12 939 Toolbox, wiring harness. Do not clamp the seal in the pin.
|
13.
|
Check that the stripped lead goes through the entire clamped portion of the pin and that the insulation is properly clamped.
|
14.
|
Press the pin into the connector.
|
15.
|
Check that the pin is properly secured.
|
16.
|
Press the seal into the connector.
|
17.
|
Check that the connector pins are straight.
|
19.
|
Fit the secondary catch. Replace as necessary.
|
20.
|
Secure the leads with a cable tie.
|
21.
|
Fit the connector in the bracket.
|

|
Cut off the cable tie.
|
2.
|
Carefully release the secondary catch.
|
3.
|
Undo the sleeve catch by pressing in the extraction tool (part no. 85 80 151).
|
4.
|
Pull out the cable with the sleeve.
|
5.
|
Cut off the lead at the sleeve.
|
6.
|
If the lead is not long enough, splice it as follows:
|

6.1.
|
Strip the insulation off of the leads.
|
|
6.2.
|
Fit a shrink tube with adhesive on the line.
|

6.3.
|

Check that the stripped lead goes through the entire clamped portion of the sleeve and that the insulation is properly clamped.

12.
|
Press the sleeve into the connector.
|
13.
|
Check that the sleeve is properly secured.
|
14.
|
Press the seal into the connector.
|
15.
|
Check that the sleeve's depth of engagement is the same as the other sleeves in the connector.
|
16.
|
Fit the secondary catch. Replace as necessary.
|
17.
|
Secure the leads with a cable tie.
|
18.
|
Check that the connector pins are straight.
|
19.
|
Fit the connector in the bracket.
|

|
Plug in the connector and secure the wiring harness.
|
2.
|
Fit the battery tray.
|
3.
|

Plug in the connector under the control module and the TCM connector.
|
4.
|
Fit the main fuse box, bonnet switch and battery cooling pipe.
|
5.
|
Fit the battery cover.
|
