Crankshaft position sensor (345), PSG16

Crankshaft position sensor (345), PSG16

Location

Crankshaft position sensor (345)

Main task

The crankshaft sensor sends the engine control module information on engine speed and when the engine is at top dead centre. This information is used to calculate permissible injection quantity as well as when fuel pressure build-up should start.

Type

Four air slots are cut in one of the crankshaft balance weights. When the air slots pass the sensor, AC is induced with a frequency proportional to engine speed. The control module uses two of the four air slots to mark top dead centre.

These air slots are displaced 13° in relation to top dead centre. Note that the special tool to block the engine in top dead centre does not fit into the crankshaft sensor air slot. There is a special socket for the special tool. This socket is not displaced in relation to top dead centre.
