Central locking system, detailed description
|
BCM is the control module that contains all the central locking system logic. BCM sends the lock command on the bus. Respective door modules activate the central locking system motor in its door, the bootlid is activated by REC and the filler flap by BCM directly. The remote receiver is located in CIM and checks that the remote control's code is approved, identifies the remote control, the button that has been depressed and how it has been depressed. CIM then wakes the other systems on the instrument bus and sends out information on the bus.
TSL (Theft Security Locking) is activated when locking with the remote control. TSL is not available on the US/CA markets. TSL is an extra locking stage where the lock buttons are blocked so that the door lock cannot be opened from the outside.
TSL can only be unlocked using the remote control except for the front left door, which can be unlocked with an emergency key. TSL locking can be optionally set with the diagnostic tool to activate when pressing the remote control lock button twice. Inserting the key into the ignition switch will change the status from TSL-locked to locked. The doors can then be unlocked from inside the car using the central locking buttons in the front doors.
The front left door can be locked using the emergency key, under the condition that the door is closed. You can unlock the door using the emergency key even if it is TSL activated. All doors can be locked with the mechanical door lock knobs, however, the driver's door must be closed. All doors can be unlocked in the same way under the condition that they are not TSL activated.
Locking using the buttons inside the compartment is blocked when the battery voltage is below 9V. If the voltage drops below this level during a locking sequence the BCM will send an unlock command. If this is repeated 3 times during a 3-minute period the locking attempt will be discontinued until the engine has been started and the battery voltage exceeds 9V. The locks cannot be operated electrically when the starter is run.
If a lock or unlock command is unsuccessful for another reason the system will make two more attempts within 5s. If even these attempts fail an error message will be shown on SID.
The remote control has the following functions:

The receiver is turned off when the vehicle speed exceeds 5 km/h to prevent the tyre pressure monitoring system from interfering. It is also turned off in "transport mode", i.e. when the transport fuse in UEC has been removed so that the car will have the smallest possible standing current consumption. BCM listens to the bus messages concerning depressed remote control buttons from CIM until the remote control/ignition key has been inserted in the ignition and the transponder has been approved. CIM identifies a button press as follows:

The remote control's battery status
|
When the remote control is used information will be transferred about the remote control's battery status. With a too low level 10 times in a row from the same remote the CIM will send out a message about this on the bus. Weak battery is indicated on SID.
All keys must be available during key teach-in. The transponder and the remote control are taught-in in one sequence. 5 keys can be programmed. The number of learned keys is shown on SID if the button for bootlid opening is pressed in when the ignition key is in the ON position. The car must also be at a standstill.

Locking and unlocking the doors using the remote control

All the doors must be closed for TSL. On US/CA cars without TSL, only the driver's door need be closed. The remaining doors will be locked and remain locked when closed. Locking or unlocking with the remote control can be confirmed with sound and direction indicators (market-dependent and optional with diagnostic tool). If locking or unlocking fails for some reason, this confirmation will not be given. After locking with the remote control, the central locking and boot buttons in the door and the switch in the bootlid handle will be disconnected.

Comfort closing / opening
|
The function is available on cars with pinch protection on the window lifts and can only be activated by using the remote control under the condition that the ignition is off and the battery voltage is OK. Comfort closing is defined as the windows being closed, the roof closed and the mirrors being folded in (the function depends on how the car is equipped). The function is activated using the remote control's lock button, which is held in continuously. When closing is complete and without fault this is confirmed with an ordinary lock indication. Comfort opening opens the windows and roof, but the mirrors are not folded out. The function is activated using the remote control's unlock button, which is pressed down continuously. When opening is complete and without fault this is confirmed with an ordinary unlock indication.

Door buttons for the central locking system

Both front doors have a central lock button for locking and unlocking. When locking all doors are locked if the driver's door is closed. The switch in the bootlid's handle is disconnected and the filler flap is locked. If any of the passenger doors are closed afterwards this will remain locked. When unlocking on cars for the US/CA market only the door whose button has been activated and the filler flap will be unlocked when the button is pressed the first time. When pressed twice the remaining doors will be unlocked and the bootlid's handle activated. On other markets all doors and the filler flap will be unlocked and the bootlid's handle activated when pressed once. The buttons are not active if the car is locked using the remote control.

Door button for bootlid opening

The button is in the driver's door and activates the bootlid handle when pressed once. Pressing twice opens the bootlid (pop-up). The button is not active if the car is locked using the remote control or if the car's speed exceeds 13 km/h.
The fuel filler flap, all the doors and the boot will lock unless the bootlid or one of the doors is opened within 3 minutes after unlocking with the remote control (market dependent and optional with diagnostic tool). The door buttons for the central locking system and the boot and the switch on the bootlid handle will be disconnected as well. The same functionality will be applied as when locking with the remote control. Confirmation with sound and lights will not be given when locking in this way. 30 seconds after closing the bootlid, the switch in the bootlid handle will be disconnected. This means that the boot is locked from the outside.
On some markets the central locking system can be remote controlled via a telematic service (On Star).
