Fuel Level Sensor Circuit, Performance Problem

Fault symptom

Incorrect display of fuel level

On-board diagnosis

Type of diagnosis:

Continuous

Enable criteria:

General conditions for this DTC
Battery voltage must be between 11 - 16 V.
Engine running.
NONE of the following DTCs must be detected:

P0462, P0463
Test 1
Fuel level between 2 - 53 litres.

Test 2
Fuel level over 53 litres.

Fault criteria:

Test 1
No change of sensor value over a distance of 25 km.

Test 2
No change of sensor value over a distance of 150 km.

None

System reaction to a fault:

The control module uses a substitute value of 40 litres when fault is detected.

OK report:

When the fault criterion is NOT fulfilled.

Fault handling:

Type III without Check Engine.

Checking the wiring harness

Move the wiring harness at several spots and in several directions to reveal intermittent breaks and short-circuits. Check switches, connectors and crimp connections for oxidation, retracted pins and pin clamping force.

Diagnostic help

Diagnosis regards:

Electrical fault in connecting leads or component.
Sensor sticking mechanically.
Fault in connector H42-2 is often a cause of this DTC.
