Brief description

Engine

The engine is a fluid-cooled 4-cylinder, 1.8 litre petrol driven in-line engine with 4 valves per cylinder and also 2 overhead camshafts. The engine is integrated with the gearbox into one unit and is positioned transversely in the engine bay. The engine is a crossflow type, i.e. with the inlet ducts on one side and the outlet ducts on the other side of the combustion chambers.

The hardened crankshaft is supported on five main bearings where the middle one also acts as an axial guide bearing.

The camshafts are driven by a tooth belt with self-adjusting belt tensioner.

In order to obtain a compact engine, the coolant pump drive is integrated in the timing gear. The camshafts act directly on the valves via hydraulic valve tappets. The main advantages of hydraulic valve tappets are quiet running and high reliability. The engines have only one belt circuit for driving the generator and AC compressor. The belt circuit has an automatic and self-adjusting belt tensioner for simple service and long life.

For efficient dampening of engine movements, the right and the left engine pads are hydraulic. Their most efficient range is between idling speed and around 1800 rpm. Hydraulic engine pads improve damping of horizontal and vertical engine movements and thereby reduce vibration and noise levels in the engine.
