Camshaft drive

Camshafts

The engine has twin overhead camshafts with large diameter base circle, allowing high lift with little strain. The camshafts are driven by a tooth belt with self-adjusting belt tensioner. There are two adjuster rollers in the belt circuit. The water pump integrated in the engine block is also driven by the camshaft drive.

The camshafts act directly on the valves via hydraulic valve tappets, which are adjusted automatically as the valve length changes at different temperatures. They work in oil baths fed with oil via an oil passage in the cylinder head. The main advantages of hydraulic valve tappets are quiet running and high reliability.

The inlet valves are made of steel with chrome-plated stems.

The exhaust valves are made of special steel.
