The telephone system in the car is available in three categories: Tel 1, Tel 2 and OnStar.
Tel 1 means that the car is equipped with infotainment system 1 and the telephone has an external mobile telephone provision that can be connected to the system via a connector in the dashboard. Tel 1 means that the external telephone keypad must be used when dialling. The microphone is used for speaking (

in the left-hand or right-hand A-pillar) along with the normal car audio system speakers.
Tel 2 means that the car is equipped with infotainment system 2 or 3. With Tel 2, the car has an integrated telephone. The telematics unit (

A telephone and screen for display of selected telephone functions are integrated into infotainment systems 2 and 3. The steering wheel keypad can be used to make calls and answer the telephone, volume adjustment or to scroll and select a number from one of three call lists. The microphone is used for speaking along with the normal audio system speakers. Voice control for the telephone, telephone book and SMS text message service is available with Tel 2.
OnStar uses the same telephone system as Tel 2 but with extra telematics functions (communication via mobile telephone). All cars in the USA can, with help from OnStar, receive several guidance services and emergency assistance in the event of an accident. In order to contact OnStar, just press the OnStar button on the dashboard and the system connects the car with OnStar and people who can offer assistance with a number of traffic services. The system calls an emergency service centre in the event of an accident during which an airbag has been deployed. With help from the GPS, the car's position can be localised, which facilitates a more rapid response by rescue workers.
The telematics unit, radio and control panel use the O-bus to communicate with each other. The telematics unit has a so-called Flash memory which means that it can be SPS programmed for additional functions at a later time.
