(521-2631) ESP not working

Symptom: Problems remain following fault diagnosis and replacement of yaw rate sensor. In some cases the following message may be given:

ESP not working Cars affected 9-3 (9440) 4D and CV, M03-05 Background Yaw rate sensor (658) neutral position may be outside the tolerance due to tolerances in internal components and the production process. This may lead to the ESP system being shut down. In the case of customer complaint the following procedures must be carried out. Symptom description Problems remain following fault diagnosis and replacement of yaw rate sensor. In some cases the following message may be given: Diagnostic trouble code C0186 00 and/or C0186 11 The symbol TCS OFF or ESP OFF illuminates in the MIU SID message: ! Anti-spin system failure. Contact workshop. or ! Anti-skid system failure. Contact workshop. Parts required Washer M6, max. Ø 20 mm. Procedure By adjusting the yaw rate sensor's neutral position using washers under the sensor, values within the applicable tolerances can be attained. Park the car on a horizontal surface. Check the value of the yaw rate sensor using Tech2 - ESP - READ VALUES - LATERAL ACCELERATION. The car should not be loaded while checking the yaw rate sensor's value. Wind down the window and measure with Tech2 from the outside. If the unloaded value is between 0 to 0.09 m/s 2 then the value is OK. If the value is not OK, continue with step 3 and compensate the yaw rate sensor's neutral position in accordance with the table below. Read value (m/s 2 ) To compensate (mm) 0.00 0.00 +/- 0.09 0.61 +/- 0.18 1.22 +/- 0.26 1.83 +/- 0.35 2.44 +/- 0.44 3.05 +/- 0.53 3.66 +/- 0.61 4.27 +/- 0.70 4.88 +/- 0.79 5.49 +/- 0.88 6.10 +/- 0.96 6.71 +/- 1.05 7.32
Remove the floor console: Remove the front side panels (A). Remove the rear cover (B) by pulling it straight back. Remove the rear side panels (C). Man: Remove the cover (D) over the gear lever housing. Use 82 93 474 Removal tool, in the rear edge of the cover and pull backwards. Aut: Remove the screw and holder backwards. Remove the cover (E) under the handbrake by undoing the hooks and pulling the cover straight out. Remove the cover on the passenger side by squeezing the cover together and lifting upwards. Remove the compartment under the passenger side's cover. Lift up the rubber mat in the floor console's storage compartment and remove the screws. Remove the floor console's screws (F), note that there are different screws for plastic and aluminium. Unplug the connectors (G) from the handbrake and the 12 V socket if fitted. Remove the cable ties. Pull the handbrake and unhook the air duct from the floor console's rear bracket. Remove the ignition switch from the floor console so that it is possible to switch the ignition on/off. Lift out the console upwards and backwards. Detach the gear lever/gear selector housing console: Undo the adjustment and unhook the cables (A) to the handbrake. Remove the cable ferrules from the console. Move the front seats to their rear position. Mark the position on the centre console's front screws (B). Remove the front screws. Move the seats to their front position and remove the console's rear screws (C). Remove the air ducts (D). Lift up the gear lever/gear selector housing and remove the nuts to the yaw rate sensor. Adjust the yaw rate sensor's neutral position using washers under the yaw rate sensor, use the values from step 2: To reduce the read value, fit washer(s) on the right-hand side (A). To increase the read value, fit washer(s) on the left-hand side (B). Fit the yaw rate sensor. Tightening torque 10 Nm (7 lbf ft) Check the value of the yaw rate sensor using Tech2 - ESP - READ VALUES - LATERAL ACCELERATION. An approved value is between 0 to 0.09 m/s 2 . Clear any diagnostic trouble codes using Tech2. Fit the gear lever/gear selector housing console: Fit the air ducts (D). Fit the screws (B, C) to the gear lever housing console. Check that the front screws align with the marking. Tightening torque 10 Nm (7 lbf ft) Connect the handbrake cables (A). Adjust the cables in accordance with WIS - Brakes - Handbrake - Adjustment/Replacement. Fit the floor console: Align the console. Plug in the connectors (G) to the handbrake and the 12 V socket if fitted. Fit the cable ties. Fit the air ducts, check that the rear air duct locks into the rear bracket. Fit the ignition switch to the floor console. Lower the handbrake. Fit the floor console's screws (F), note that there are different screws for plastic and aluminium. Fit the rubber mat in the floor console's storage compartment. Fit the compartment under the passenger side's cover and fit the cover. Fit the cover (E) under the handbrake. Aut: Fit the holder. Man: Fit the cover (D) over the gear lever housing. Fit the rear side panels (C). Fit the rear cover (B). Fit the front side panels (A).
