To remove

Important

Scrupulous cleanliness must always be observed during all work with hydraulic components.



1. Diesel engine: Remove the upper engine cover.

2. Clamp the return hose and supply line using 30 07 739 Hose pinch-off pliers .

3. Remove the pipes from the bracket on top of the steering gear. Leave the screw and clamp in place.

4. Position the steering wheel and the wheels so that they face straight ahead. Use woven tape to secure the steering wheel to the dashboard.

5. Raise the car.

6. Remove the front wheels.

7. Diesel engine: Remove the lower engine cover.


CV: Remove the chassis reinforcement, front subframe, CV .

8. Remove the nuts securing the track rod ends to the steering swivel members on both sides.

Remove the track rod using 87 91 287 Puller, 150 mm .


9. Remove the anti-roll bar links from the anti-roll bar. Hold with a thin 17 mm open wrench so that the ball joint does not turn.

10. Remove the heat shield from the steering gear.


11. Remove the steering shaft joint from the steering gear.


12. Remove the steering gear bolts, nuts and washers.

13. Remove the clamps securing the delivery pipe to the subframe.


14. Place a receptacle under the car. Detach the delivery line and the return line from the steering gear. Plug the lines.


15. Twist up the anti-roll bar as high as possible, twist the steering swivel member forward slightly and lift out the steering gear through the wheel housing on the driver's side.


To fit


1. Lift up the power steering lines and lift the steering gear into place through the wheel housing on the driver's side.

2. Fit the return line to the steering gear. Fit new O-rings. Make sure the lines are correctly positioned at the bracket on the top of the steering gear.

Important

Make sure that the return line (line with the short nut) is connected to the lower of the two connections.

The steering gear will be destroyed if the lines are mixed up!


Tightening torque 28 Nm (21 lbf ft)

3. Fit the delivery line to the steering gear. Fit new O-rings. Make sure the lines are correctly positioned at the bracket on the top of the steering gear.

Tightening torque 28 Nm (21 lbf ft)


4. Fit the steering gear to the subframe and the delivery pipe clamps to the subframe.

Note

Fit the washers and nuts.


Tightening torque 50 Nm +60° (37 lbf ft +60°)


5. Fit the track rod ends to the steering swivel members.

Tightening torque 35 Nm (26 lbf ft)


6. Twist the anti-roll bar down into position. Fit the anti-roll bar links to the anti-roll bar. Hold with a thin 17 mm open wrench so that the ball joint does not turn.

Tightening torque 64 Nm (47 lbf ft)

7. Put the wheels in the straight ahead position and fit the steering shaft joint to the steering gear. Clean the threads and apply 74 96 268 Threadlock to the threads

Warning

Check that the bolt fits into the groove on the pinion shaft.


Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 lbf ft)


8. Fit the heat shield to the steering gear.

9. CV: Fit the chassis reinforcement, front subframe, CV .

Diesel engine: Fit the lower engine cover.


10. Lower the car to the floor.

11. Refit the wheels .

Tightening torque 110 Nm (81 lbf ft)

12. Fit the pipes to the bracket on top of the steering gear.


13. Remove the hose pinch-off pliers and fill with power steering fluid .

14. Diesel engine: Fit the upper engine cover.

15. Remove the tape or other means used to prevent the steering wheel from moving.

16. Bleed the power steering system and check for leaks.

17. Carry out a wheel alignment .
