Steering swivel member

Steering swivel member

To remove


1. Raise the car.

2. Remove the wheel.

3. Remove the retaining spring from the brake pad.


4. Remove the protective covers. Remove the hydraulic body and suspend it with a hook in the brake pipe holder.

Remove the outer brake pad.

5. Remove the brake caliper holder.


6. Remove the brake disc.


7. Remove the wheel sensor connection.

8. Clean, lubricate the bolt threads and remove the nut which holds the toe-link to the steering swivel member.


9. Relieve the weight from the lower suspension arm with an pillar jack and remove the bolt.

Note

The bolt must be unscrewed from the suspension arm.

Remove the jack.


10. Clean, lubricate the bolt threads and remove the shock absorber lower bracket.

11. Remove the anti-roll bar link from the steering swivel member.

12. Remove the upper suspension arm from the steering swivel member.

13. Remove the steering swivel member from the longitudinal link and lift the hub from the toe-link.


14. Remove the hub and the brake shield.


To fit


1. When fitting a new steering swivel member, transfer or fit new a bush in steering swivel member. Remove the bush with KM 906-61-62, fit with KM 906-63-64 included in kit 89 96 761.

Clean the contact surfaces. Fit the hub and the brake shield with new nuts.

Tightening torque 50 Nm +30° (40 lbf ft +30°)

2. Pull the steering swivel member onto the toe-link bolt and fit a new nut.

3. Fit the steering swivel member to the upper suspension arm and fit a new nut.


4. Fit the anti-roll bar to the steering swivel member.

Tightening torque 53 Nm (39 lbf ft)

5. Fit the steering swivel member to the longitudinal link.

Tightening torque 150 Nm (110 lbf ft)


6. Fit the shock absorber lower bracket.

Tightening torque 150 Nm (110 lbf ft)

Note

For correct fitting, see fitting Shock absorber .


7. Torque tighten the toe-link nut, use 89 96 613 Sleeve, MacPherson strut , MacPherson strut and hold with a 10 mm sleeve.

Tightening torque 75 Nm +60° (55 lbf ft +60°)

8. Fit the wheel sensor connector.

9. Lift up the lower suspension arm with an pillar jack and fit the bolt.

Note

The bolt must be screwed into the suspension arm.


10. Lift the lower suspension arm to normal position with an upright jack and fit a new nut

Tightening torque 75 Nm +90° (55 lbf ft +90°)

11. Tighten the nut which holds the steering swivel member to the upper suspension arm.

Tightening torque 125 Nm +135° (92 lbf ft +135°)

12. Clean the contact surfaces between the hub and the brake disc.

Fit the brake disc and the lock bolt.

Tightening torque 7 Nm (5 lbf ft)


13. Clean the contact surfaces between the brake caliper holder and the steering swivel member.

Fit the brake caliper holder with 74 96 268 Nut lock .

Tightening torque 130 Nm +45° (96 lbf ft +45°)

14. Remove the inner brake pad and screw in the brake piston using 89 96 969 Resetting tool and 89 96 977 Adapter .


15. Fit the brake pads.

Note

On older models of brake pads: Make sure the springs on the inner pad are positioned in the groove of the piston.


16. Fit the hydraulic body.

Tightening torque 28 Nm (21 lbf ft)

Fit the protective covers.

Fit the retaining spring to the brake caliper.


17. Fit the wheel .

18. Lower the car to the floor.

19. Depress the brake pedal several times to press out the self adjustment of the brake pistons and the parking brake.

20. Carry out four wheel checking and four wheel alignment .
