The back of the seat cannot be folded forward

Cars affected

Saab 9-3 (9440) CV M04 within Vehicle Identification Number range 46000001 - 46017897

Background

Plastic components in the backrest release mechanism can break when subjected to excess loading. The reason may be that the cable is incorrectly adjusted or the backrest is subjected to excess loading in the forward direction while the handle is lifted. The back of the seat cannot then be folded forward when the release handle is lifted.

In the case of customer complaint, the following procedure must be carried out.

Symptom description

Parts required

1. Remove the backrest upholstery in accordance with WIS - Body - Seats - Adjustment/Replacement - Backrest upholstery, front seat, CV.

2. Remove the connector from the microswitch.

3. Remove the screw and the control unit from the seat frame.

8. Fit the control unit to the seat frame and tighten the screw.

9. Connect the connector to the microswitch.

10. Adjust the cable tension as follows:

10.a. Fit the retaining clip so that it is firmly attached to the bracket but does not lock the cable sheath.

10.b. Pull the cable sheath down so that the cable is stretched and there is no play in the control arm.

11. Press the retaining clip into place.

12. Remove the locking pin from the unit.

13. Check the function of the backrest. Fold the backrest forward and back. Check that there is a certain amount of play in the control arm, approx. 5-8 degrees.

14. Check that the unit is correctly adjusted by fitting the locking pin in the hole in the control unit.

Note

If the locking pin cannot be fitted then the cable sheath is too tightly adjusted. Loosen the cable sheath slightly.
