Saab 9-3 M05 with engine alternative Z19.
Background |
Rattling can be heard from the engine compartment of some diesel-engined cars. In most cases, this is because the radiator was not properly installed at the upper mounting on the radiator member. In some cases, workshops have replaced the engine unnecessarily due to the rattling.

Symptom description
Rattling from engine compartment.Parts required |
Acid-free Vaseline.
Procedure |
1. |
Start the engine and engage the gear lever in neutral.
|
2. |
Rev the engine and localise the rattling.
|
4. |
If the rattling is cased by the radiator:
Remove the lower, front engine cover. |
5. |
Locate the two front radiator mountings in the front edge of the subframe.
|
6. |
Slightly slacken the screws holding the radiator mountings so that the radiator is lowered.
|
7. |
Lubricate the upper rubber radiator mountings with acid-free Vaseline.
|
9. |
If the upper rubber mountings are not slightly compressed, slacken the lower mountings and press them upward when re-tightening.
|

Install the lower, front engine cover.
