Intermittent trailer/caravan lighting

Cars affected

A. Cars towing trailer/caravan with intermittent centre brake light (with LEDs):

Saab 9-3 (9440) 4D with towbar up to and including Vehicle Identification Number 51006895

Saab 9-3 (9440) CV with towbar up to and including Vehicle Identification Number 56001444

B. Cars towing trailer/caravan with intermittent position lights and/or rapidly flashing direction indicators:

Saab 9-3 (9440) 4D with towbar up to and including Vehicle Identification Number 41010294

Saab 9-3 (9440) CV with towbar up to and including Vehicle Identification Number 46003447

Background

A. The trailer/caravan centre brake light (with LEDs) may be sensitive to the car's diagnostics of trailer/caravan brake lights. In order to avoid the centre brake light flashing, the diagnostics for the brake light circuit can be modified so that it is only performed when the brake light is activated.

B. The older version of the electronic control module for towbars is highly sensitive to the car's diagnostics of trailer/caravan lighting and has no support for trailers/caravans with left and right-hand position lights connected. After the new electronic control module is fitted (part no. 12803356 - CA: 40 12803356), the software in the luggage compartment electrical centre (REC) must be updated for full functionality to be achieved. If the software is not updated then diagnostic trouble code B3887 is generated in the REC. The electronic control module cannot cope with electrical loads above 100 watts.

The car only has support for trailers/caravans which are connected in accordance with ISO 1724 (7-pin) or ISO 11446 (13-pin). In order for trailer/caravan lighting to function satisfactorily the trailer/caravan connection must be connected in accordance with the prevailing ISO standard.

In the case of customer complaint, the following procedures must be carried out.

Symptom description

A. Trailer/caravan with intermittent centre brake light.

B. Trailer/caravan with intermittent position lights and/or rapidly flashing direction indicators.

Parts required

Only applies to cars with the older electronic control module, part no. 9228740 (symptom B):

Procedure

A. Cars towing trailer/caravan with intermittent centre brake light (with LEDs):

1. 4D and CV M03-M04: SPS programme the REC using the correct software in accordance with TIS2000. Use TIS 2004-5 or later.

2. 4D M05 up to and including Vehicle Identification Number 51006895: Perform "Add" REC using Tech2. Use Tech2 version 115.000 or later.

3. CV M05 up to and including Vehicle Identification Number 56001444: Perform "Add" REC using Tech2. Use Tech2 version 115.000 or later.

1. 4D: Open the left-hand rear inspection hatch.

2. 4D: Check if the car is equipped with an older version of the electronic control module (part no. 9228740).

3. CV: Remove the luggage compartment side trim, see WIS - 8. Body - Interior equipment - Adjustment/Replacement - Luggage compartment side trim, CV.

4. CV: Check if the car is equipped with an older version of the electronic control module (part no. 9228740).

5. Cars with older version of electronic control module: Replace the electronic control module with a new one (part no. 12803356).

6. CV: Fit the luggage compartment side trim, see WIS - 8. Body - Interior equipment - Adjustment/Replacement - Luggage compartment side trim, CV.

8. SPS programme the REC using the correct software in accordance with TIS2000. Use TIS 2004-5 or later.

9. Check whether the trailer/caravan lighting is working.

10. If the trailer/caravan position lights are still intermittent then the fault is in the trailer/caravan wiring harness.

Note

The electronic control module cannot cope with electrical loads above 100 watts.

The car only has support for trailers/caravans which are connected in accordance with ISO 1724 (7-pin) or ISO 11446 (13-pin). Intermittent position lights may arise on trailers/caravans not conforming to this ISO standard even if the car has the new electronic control module for towbar fitted and has the latest software for the REC.
