The telephone system in the car is available in three categories: Tel 1, Tel 2 and OnStar.
Tel 1 means that the car is equipped with infotainment system 1 and the telephone has an external mobile telephone provision that can be connected to the system via a connector in the dashboard. Tel 1 means that the external telephone keypad must be used when dialling. The microphone is used for speaking (

in the left-hand or right-hand A-pillar) along with the normal car audio system speakers.
Tel 2 means that the car has infotainment system 2 or 3. Tel 2 provides an integrated phone. The communication unit (

Infotainment systems 2 and 3 comprise a telephone and display for showing phone functions. The steering wheel controls can be used to make and receive calls, adjust the volume, and scroll through and select numbers from the three call lists. There is a microphone in the roof panel and sound is provided via the sound system's speakers. Tel 2 also provides advanced voice activation (AVR) of the phone, a phone book and SMS text messaging.
The OnStar option has the same telephone system as Tel 2 but with additional telecommunication functions (data communication via the mobile telephone network). OnStar provides guidance and other services, and emergency assistance in the event of an accident. OnStar can be contacted by simply pressing the OnStar button on the instrument panel. The system then connects the vehicle to OnStar and contact is made with personnel who can help with a variety of services. The system automatically calls the emergency services centre in the event of a collision in which the air bag has been triggered. The position of the vehicle can be established with the help of GPS and thus the emergency services can quickly reach the scene of the accident.
The communication unit, radio and control panel use the O-bus to communicate with each other. The communication unit has a so-called Flash memory which means that it can be SPS programmed for additional functions at a later time.
