Lubricating system

The gearbox lubricating system works as follows: the crown wheel and 1st and 2nd gears propel oil up to a number of strategically located oil pockets in the gearcase. When the car and with it the crown wheel stand still, 1st gear alone takes care of this task.

Ducts run from the oil pockets to the input and output shaft central ducts. From here the bearings of 1st, 2nd, 3rd, 4th and 5th gear receive oil through the holes drilled into each centre duct. 1st and 2nd gears are floating bearing mounted on the output shaft. 3rd, 4th and 5th pinions are needle bearing mounted on the input shaft. In order to increase efficiency the gearbox has low oil level to avoid oil splashes.

The reverse gear has its own lubricating system. The 1st pinion splashes oil into a collecting pocket in the wall of the clutch housing. This oil is guided into the collecting pocket by an oil guidance plate on the reverse gear lever. From this collecting pocket, the oil proceeds through the reverse gear shaft and out through the shaft's 3 radial lubricating holes. This ensures lubrication of the reverse gear's PTFE bushes, axial bearings, synchromesh and brass bushing.
