Steering gear, Z18XE, Z19 LHD

To remove

Important

Scrupulous cleanliness must always be observed during all work with hydraulic components.



1. Set the wheels in the straight-ahead position and lock the steering wheel with the steering wheel lock.

2. Remove the negative battery cable.

3. Raise the car.

4. Remove the front wheels.

5. CV: Remove Chassis reinforcement, front subframe .

6. Z19: Remove the lower engine cover (A).


7. Fit the nut (A) holding the track rod ends to the steering swivel member on both sides. Remove the track rods using 87 91 287 Puller, 150 mm .


8. Remove the anti-roll bar links (B) from the anti-roll bar. Hold with a thin 17 mm open wrench so that the ball joint does not turn.

9. Remove the steering shaft joint (A) from the steering gear.


10. Z19: Remove the front exhaust pipe (A).


11. Remove the rear torque rod bracket (A).


12. Remove the steering wheel angle sensor's electrical connection (A) from the steering gear (certain cars).


13. Place a receptacle under the car. Detach the delivery line and the return line (B) from the steering gear. Plug the lines.

14. Remove the servo unit with bracket (C) from the steering gear.

15. Remove the steering gear bolts, nuts and washers (A).


16. Hold up the servo unit with a 83 95 212 Strap .

17. Turn up the anti-roll bar and lift out the steering gear.

18. Clamp the steering gear in the rubber coating in a vice.

19. Remove the gaiters' clamps (A) to the steering gear.


20. Remove the inner track rods (B) use 89 97 009 Special wrench (KM-6321) .


To fit


1. Clamp the new steering gear in the rubber coating in a vice.

2. Fit the rubber straps (A) to the steering gear.


3. Fit the inner track rods (B) use 89 97 009 Special wrench (KM-6321) .

Tightening torque 90 Nm (66 lbf ft)

Note

The left and right track-rod ends are different. The track rod ends should curve slightly backwards when fitted. Markings: L = left-hand side, R = right-hand side.



4. Fit the gaiters with new clamps (A), use 30 16 235 Pliers .

5. Remove the steering gear from the vice.

6. Hold up the servo unit and lift the steering gear into place.

7. Fit the steering gear to the subframe.

Tightening torque 50 Nm +60° (37 lbf ft +60°)


8. Fit the servo unit with bracket (C) to the steering gear.


9. Fit the servo pipes (B), with new seals, to the steering gear

Tightening torque 20 Nm (14.8 lbf ft)

10. Fit the steering wheel angle sensor's electrical connection (A) to the steering gear (certain cars).

11. Fit the track rod ends (A) to the steering swivel members.

Tightening torque 35 Nm (26 lbf ft)


12. Fit the anti-roll bar links (B) to the anti-roll bar. Hold with a thin 17 mm open wrench so that the ball joint does not turn.

Tightening torque 64 Nm (47 lbf ft)

13. Put the wheels in the straight-ahead position and fit the steering shaft joint (A) to the steering gear. Clean the threads and apply Thread locking adhesive, Loctite 242 to the threads.

Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 lbf ft)

Warning

Check that the bolt fits into the groove on the pinion shaft.



14. Fit the rear torque rod bracket (A).

Tightening torque: 80 Nm (59 lbf ft)


15. Z19: Fit the front exhaust pipe (A).

Tightening torque 25 Nm (18 lbf ft)


16. Wipe clean the subframe from any oil.

17. Z19: Fit the lower engine cover (A).


18. CV: Fit the chassis reinforcement, front subframe, CV .

19. Lower the car to the floor.

20. Refit the wheels .

21. Fit the battery's negative cable.

22. Carry out Procedures after disconnecting the battery .

23. Top up with power steering fluid .

24. Bleed the power steering system and check for leaks.

25. Carry out a wheel alignment .
