Gaiter, steering gear

To remove


1. Raise the car.

2. Remove the wheel.

3. Slacken the locknut.


4. Remove the nut securing the track rod end to the steering swivel member.

5. Part the track rod end from the steering swivel member with 87 91 287 Puller, 150 mm .

6. Unscrew the track rod end from the track rod, counting the number of turns.

7. Blow the area clean with compressed air and remove the clips from the gaiter. Pull off the gaiter.


To fit


1. If necessary, carefully wipe the track rod clean and examine the ball joint.

Important

If sand, gravel or other contaminants enter the ball joint (e.g. if the boot has been defective for a time), the track rod must be changed.


2. Fit a new gaiter to the track rod and steering gear housing. Fit new clips using 30 16 235 Pliers to secure them.


3. Screw on the track rod end the same number of turns as when it was removed.

Note

The left and right track-rod ends are different. The track rod ends should curve slightly backwards when fitted. Markings: L = left-hand side, R = right-hand side.


4. Bolt the track rod end to the steering swivel member.

Tightening torque 35 Nm (26 lbf ft)

5. Tighten the track rod end's locknut.

Tightening torque 70 Nm (55 lbf ft)

6. Fit the wheel .

7. Lower the car to the floor.

8. Check the toe-in and adjust if required.
