Crankshaft bearing play, check (measure bearing play with Plastigage)

Crankshaft bearing play, check (measure bearing play with Plastigage)

Bearing play - crankshaft bearing cap removed.

1. Caution

Clean the crankshaft bearing journal and oil the crankshaft bearing shells. This is necessary so that the plastic thread does not break when removing the crankshaft bearing cap. Do not turn the crankshaft.

2. With Plastigage (workable plastic thread).

Take a piece of thread - the width of the bearing - and lay it axially between the crankshaft journal and the bearing shell (arrow). Fit the crankshaft bearing cap with torque - 50 Nm +45° + 15°.

Note

The bolts can be used one more time for checking the crankshaft bearing play.

3. Crankshaft - Remove the crankshaft bearing cap again.

4. Compare the width of the flat plastic thread (arrow) with the scale.

Plastigage is available with two measuring ranges.

Permitted crankshaft bearing play: 0.005 to 0.059 mm.

Tightening torque/angle tightening

Crankshaft bearing cap on engine block with new bolts - tightening torque 50 Nm + 45° + 15°.
