Background

A problem has been reported on a small number of cars concerning the engaging or disengaging of reverse gear. The selector unit must be replaced to rectify this.

To resolve customer complaints, proceed as follows.

Symptom description

Difficult to engage/disengage reverse gear.



Parts required

55 556 311 Selector unit

Procedure

Replace the selector unit fitted to the gearbox according to the following method.

To remove


1. Remove the battery

2. Remove the battery cover according to WIS - Electrical system - Charging system - Adjustment, replace - Battery cover, lower part.

3. B284: Remove the catalytic converter's heat shields:

Fold up the expansion tank

Remove the heat shields (A).


4. Z19: Loosen the engine harness' cable tie (A).


5. Remove the connector from the reversing light switch (A)


6. Remove the gearbox's bleed hose (B).

7. Remove the gear cables

Remove the gear cables from the shift arms (C).

Press the locking sleeves backward and remove the cable casings from the bracket (D).

8. Blow clean around the selector unit.

9. Remove the selector unit:

The selector unit must be in neutral position to enable removal.

Remove the bolts and lift up the selector unit (A).



To fit


1. Fit the selector unit on the gear box (A).

Note

The selector unit must be in neutral position to enable fitting.


Tightening torque: 25 Nm (18 lbf ft)


2. Connect the gear cables:

Press the locking sleeves backward and fit the cable casings in the bracket (D).

Fit the gear cables from the shift arms (C).


3. Fit the bleed hose (B).

4. Fit the reversing light switch connector (A).

5. Z19: Fit the engine harness' cable tie (A).


6. B284: Fit the catalytic converter's heat shields:

Fit the heat shields (A).

Fit the expansion tank


7. Adjust the gear positions according to WIS - Transmission - Manual gear box- 6-speed- Adjustment, replace - Adjusting gear cables

8. Fit the battery cover according to WIS - Electrical system - Charging system - Adjustment, replace - Battery cover, lower part.

9. Fit the battery

10. Carry out "Procedures after disconnecting the battery" according to WIS - Electrical system - Start system - Adjustment, replace - Procedures after disconnecting the battery.
