Background

A hose clamp with a too large diameter is fitted on the power steering fluid reservoir's outlet to the power steering pump. In some cases this can result in pump steering fluid leakage.

Symptom description

Leakage of power steering fluid.

Parts required

90 573 609 Hose clamp

93 160 548 Power steering fluid, Pentosin CHF 202

For fitting the modification identity plate (not US/CA):

12 785 148 Modification identity plate

93 160 907 Cleaning agent Motip Dupli, aerosol 400 ml (sufficient for 50-100 cars).

Checking the modification identity plate (not US/CA)

Before proceeding, check box B4 of the modification identity plate. From and including M04, the car's Warranty and Service Book contains the "Table of Modifications". A modification identity plate must be fitted in accordance with the section "Fitting the modification identity plate" where local directives require the marking of the car. If the box is not marked, continue as follows.

Procedure

1. Drain the power steering fluid reservoir (A) using suitable oil drainage equipment.

2. Unhook the fuel pipe (B) from the power steering fluid reservoir and move to one side.

3. Loosen the hose clamp (C) and push it back on the hose.

4. Place ample cloth/paper under the reservoir to capture any oil spill. Loosen the hose and fold it up; plug the reservoir using an appropriate plug (approx. 12-13 mm).

5. Replace the hose clamp.

6. Remove the plug and fit the hose on the power steering fluid reservoir.

7. Fit the hose clamp in the right position.

8. Remove the cloth/paper and wipe up any oil spill.

9. Hook the fuel pipe on the power steering fluid reservoir.

10. Bleed the power steering system as set out in WIS - Steering assembly - Power steering system - Adjustment/Replacement.

11. Check that power steering fluid does not leak by the hose clamp.

Marking the modification identity plate (not US/CA)

After carrying out the procedure, box B4 on the modification identity plate must be marked. From and including M04 the car's Warranty and Service Book contains the "Table of Modifications". Mark the box with the number "7" if the procedure was carried out by the importer or with the number "8" if carried out by the dealer.

A modification identity plate must only be fitted where local directives require the marking of the car.
