TECHNICAL ADVICE - Quick information for your help
Bulletin Nbr: TA248-0609
Date: ........... July 2006
Market: All Diesel
Improved fault tracing, 1,9TiD

VEHICLES CONCERNED

Saab 9-3 MY05- With 1,9 Diesel engine

Sssb 9-5 MY06- with 1,9 Diesel engine.

BACKGROUND

Improved fault tracing for 1.9 TID with information not found in WIS .

ACTION

Symptom 1: Poor performance, loss of power DTC’s:P2279, 9-3:P0400 5A or 5B, 9-5:P0402, or no DTC’s.

A. Check function of the EGR valve. Clogged / sticking. Try EGR flow test with Tech 2, if OK then try to activate EGR valve when holding it in your hand to get a better feel if it’s sticking, also look at the valve and confirm smooth movement. IF it doesn’t pass the test replace. Cross check the EGR- valve from a car where the valve is working.

B. Check vacuum hoses for the VNT control valve. Ref. TSB 254-2601 ed 2.

Use Tech 2 to check function, possibly using a vacuum pump to verify.

C. Check inlet system, from airmass meter to intake manifold, including intercooler. Ref TSB 254-2601 .

D. After repairing, run a forced regeneration, this is because the soot calculation may be incorrect due to the fault.

Symptom 2: Excessive diesel knock, engine noise

A. Check that latest ECM Software is installed. ( Go to point C ).

B. After update of S/W, perform adaption TSB 234-2599 "Pilot Adaption".

C. Perform adaption. Ref. TSB 234-2599 "Pilot Adaption".

D. Check that sound insulation is installed under the engine cover and oilsump. (SOP W548 / VIN 61101134).

Symptom 3: Engine runs on 3 cylinders, misfire, no DTC’s

A. Identify the faulty cylinder by removing the electrical connector at the injector when the engine is at idle.

OR check with Tech 2.

B. Check wiring harness. Connector at injector and the rest of the harness

C. Perform compression test a preliminary check can be done by Tech 2. This may indicate where the problem is. However, a traditional compression test is more accurate.

D. If no other fault is found, replace the injector at the cylinder causing the problem. Make sure that the old copper washer is removed, and the seating surface in the cylinderhead OK. Remember to fit a new copper washer and ADD the injector IMA code. This is very important.

Symptom 4: Regeneration does not operate, DTC’s P1901 75 or 0F

A. Check that correct ECM s/w is installed. (p/n 55 56 40 18)

B. Check the system according to TSB 254-2601

C. If the DPF is so full of soot so that the ECM doesn’t allow regeneration, disconnect the hoses from the sensor and fit plugs in the ends, then try to regenerate with Tech 2.

Symptom 5: Swirl actuator DTC P1109

A. Check that the swirl flaps move when activating with Tech 2. (Remove the engine cover and look at the control rod).

B. Check so that the swirl flaps runs smooth by disconnecting the arm between actuator and swirl flaps.

C. If they are sticking, replace intake manifold. If there is a lot of soot in that intake, check EGR function.

D. After repairing, run a forced regeneration, this is because the soot calculation may be incorrect due to the swirl fault.

Symptom 6: Air Rush noise, moaning noise at light load. (sounds like a wheel bearing )

A. Remove the right side steering swivel member from the McPhearson strut.

Pull out the inner drive joint from the intermediate shaft and add some grease to the spines. (Mobil XHP 222 blue water proof) .

Do not take apart the boot to lubricate the drive joint, ONLY the spines should be greased.

Symptom 7: Fuel pressure too high to too low DTC’s P0090 or P0091.

A. Check the supply fuel pressure, it should be within 3.8 – 5.0 bars. If it’s too low pump capacity or fuellines can be the fault, if too high pressure check for a blocked return line.

B. Check the backpressure in the return line. It must be less that 1 bar.

C. For information, the Saab 9-5 has got an injector with a larger orifice, as a result from this the back pressure in the return line is lower as from W611 VIN 61124866.
