Cylinder head, B284

To remove


1. Remove the cylinder head. See Cylinder head, gasket, front or Cylinder head, gasket, rear.

2. Remove the camshafts' bolts (A) and sprockets (B), counterholding with a fixed spanner on the camshaft flats.


3. Remove the camshaft bearing caps by slackening the bolts (A) in stages - 1/2 to 1 turn. Note the markings on the bearing caps so that they are refitted correctly later (B).


4. Lift out the camshafts and note the rear marking on the camshafts.

The last letters in the marking:

RI intake camshaft, rear cylinder bank
RE exhaust camshaft, rear cylinder bank
LI intake camshaft, front cylinder bank
LE exhaust camshaft, front cylinder bank


5. Remove the rocker arms and tappets (A). Store them in 83 93 787 Valve stand so they do not get mixed up.


6. Fit 32 025 053 Holder (EN-47642) on the cylinder head.


7. Fit the holder and cylinder head in 78 74 878 Floor stand .

8. Rear cylinder head (certain cars): Remove the AIC valve (A) and pipe (B).


9. Rear cylinder head: Remove the bracket (A) and lifting eye (B).


10. Remove the exhaust manifold (A).


11. Remove the valve:

Remove the valve cones (A) using 83 96 384 Valve spring tool .


Remove the valve spring washer (B) and the valve spring (C).


Remove the valve (D)

Remove the valve guide seal (E) using 83 94 157 Pliers, valve guide seal.

12. Repeat the procedure to remove the other valves.


To fit


1. Fit the valve:

Fit a new valve guide seal (E) using 83 94 157 Pliers, valve guide seal.


Fit the valve (D) (new valve if necessary). Lubricate with engine oil.

Fit the valve spring (C) and valve spring washer (B).

Fit the valve cones (A) using 83 96 384 Valve spring tool .


2. Repeat the procedure to fit the other valves.

3. Fit the exhaust manifold (A) using new bolts and a new gasket.

Tightening torque 20 Nm (15 lbf ft)


4. Rear cylinder head: Fit the lifting eye (A) and bracket (B).


5. Rear cylinder head (certain cars): Fit the AIC valve (A) and pipe (B).


6. Remove the cylinder head from the engine stand.

7. Remove 32 025 053 Holder (EN-47642) from the cylinder head.


8. Fit the tappets and rocker arms (A). Lubricate with engine oil.


9. Lubricate the bearing seats with engine oil and position the camshafts. Use adjustment tool EN-46105-1 (old version of camshaft chain) or EN-48383-3 (new version of camshaft chain) to check that the camshafts are fitted at the correct angle. Note the rear marking on the camshafts.

The last letters in the marking:

RI intake camshaft, rear cylinder bank
RE exhaust camshaft, rear cylinder bank
LI intake camshaft, front cylinder bank
LE exhaust camshaft, front cylinder bank



10. Fit the bearing caps (A) as illustrated (markings on the caps (B)).

Tightening torque 10 Nm (7 lbf ft)

Important

Tighten the bolts in stages - 1/2 to 1 turn.



11. Fit the camshaft sprocket (B) and bolts (A) (do not fit the sprocket on the front cylinder head's intake camshaft) counterholding with an open-ended spanner on the camshaft flats.

Tightening torque: 65 Nm (48 lbf ft)


12. Fit the cylinder head. See Cylinder head, gasket, front or Cylinder head, gasket, rear.
