The type designation for manual gearboxes is divided into 4 groups of characters as in the following example:
FM57 B05 A12345
The three character groups are separated by spaces and contain different information about the gearbox as specified below.
| First group FM57: |
| F | Front-wheel drive |
| M | Manual gearbox |
| 5 | 5 forward gears |
| 5 | Final drive gear ratio: 7=3.8 |
| Second group B05: |
| B | Manual gearbox, adapted to various engine alternatives: B=engines in 9-5, 1=engines in 9-3 |
| 06 | Development variant (internal use only) |
| Third group: A12345 |
| A | Production line (A-V) |
| 12345 | Serial number |
