VEHICLES CONCERNED

Saab 9-3 & 9-5 engines with turbo.

BACKGROUND

Analysis of warranty and exchange turbo units has shown that pollution from the engine oil is one of the main reasons for repeat failures.

SYMPTOM DESCRIPTION

Contaminated oil from a damaged turbo can destroy a new unit in a very short time!

ACTION

THE ACTIONS BELOW MUST BE FOLLOWED BEFORE THE TURBO IS REPLACED!


1. Drain the engine oil

2. Fill with new engine oil and start the engine, let engine idle until the thermostat has opened ( 90° )

3. Drain the engine oil again.

4. Change the oil filter and then fill the engine once again with new oil.

5. Replace the turbo unit (See WIS ).


Cleaning the intake system

If the turbocharger has broken down mechanically or oil smoke exist, it is extremely important to check that metallic particles, oil, or other pollutants are not collected in the inlet system or the crankcase ventilation, especially between the turbocharger and the inlet manifold. This will cause further damage to the engine, if the inlet system is not cleaned thoroughly.


1. Check and clean the inlet system including the crankcase ventilation, from the air intake to the inlet of the turbocharger. This also includes replacing of the air filter (if necessary) and cleaning of the air filter housing.

2. Check the MAF sensor for contamination.

3. Clean the inter-cooler (clean with solvent and blow dry) and all pipes on the pressure side of the turbocharger to the inlet manifold.
