Saab 9-3 M08 XWD within Vehicle Identification Number range 81100049 - 81147342.

Background

On certain cars, the drive shaft seal is too poorly greased during the manufacturing process, which may result in wear marks on the drive shaft.

Symptom description

Oil leakage from the drive shaft seal on the limited slip differential (RDM)



Parts required

For lubricating the drive shaft seal:

93 165 388 Transmission oil for differential (1 litre)

For replacing the drive shaft:

Note

Estimated defective production issue is below 10%.

Do not order any parts before it has been established that the drive shaft must be replaced.

Checking the modification identity plate (not US/CA)

Before proceeding, check box A3 of the modification identity plate. From and including M04, the car's Warranty and Service Book contains the "Table of Modifications". A modification identity plate must be fitted in accordance with the section "Fitting the modification identity plate" where local directives require the marking of the car. If the box is not marked, continue as follows.

Procedure, cars with mileage below 15 000 km


1. Raise the car.

2. Inspect the area around the drive shaft seal.

Is there any leakage?

Yes: Proceed to step 3.

No: Proceed to step 4.


3. Replace the drive shaft and drive shaft seal. See WIS 9-3 (9440) - 4. Power transmission - Drive shafts - Drive shafts, rear, 4WD as well as WIS 9-3 (9440) - 4. Power transmission - Drive shafts - Drive shaft seal, rear, 4WD.

Replaced material is returned in accordance with the following:

Sweden, Germany, UK and USA: replaced units are returned in the normal return flow of warranty material.

Other markets: replaced units are returned to

4. Tap out the drive shaft from the final drive gear with a brass drift and mallet.


5. Inspect the drive shaft with regard to wear/smoothing.

Is there any wear/smoothing?

Yes: Proceed to step 3.

No: Proceed to step 6.

Drive shaft with wear.


Drive shaft with smoothing.


Drive shaft without wear/smoothing.



6. Clean the drive shaft and drive shaft seal with a rag or paper. Lubricate the drive shaft and drive shaft seal using a cotton bud. Use final drive gear oil, part no. 93 165 388.


7. Tap in the drive shaft in the final drive gear with a brass drift and mallet until the circlip clicks in. Wipe off surplus oil.


8. Check/adjust the oil level in the final drive gear, see WIS 9-3 (9440) - 4. Power transmission - All-wheel drive - Checking/changing the oil in the limited slip differential.


Procedure, cars with mileage above 15 000 km


1. Raise the car.

2. Inspect the area around the drive shaft seal.

Is there any leakage?

Yes: Proceed to step 3.

No: No action is required.


3. Replace the drive shaft and drive shaft seal. See WIS 9-3 (9440) - 4. Power transmission - Drive shafts - Drive shafts, rear, 4WD as well as WIS 9-3 (9440) - 4. Power transmission - Drive shafts - Drive shaft seal, rear, 4WD.

Replaced material is returned in accordance with the following:

Sweden, Germany, UK and USA: replaced units are returned in the normal return flow of warranty material.

Other markets: replaced units are returned to

Marking the modification identity plate (not US/CA)

After carrying out the procedure, box A3 on the modification identity plate must be marked. From and including M04 the car's Warranty and Service Book contains the "Table of Modifications". Mark the box with the number "7" if the procedure was carried out by the importer or with the number "8" if carried out by the dealer.

Note

A modification identity plate must only be fitted where local directives require the marking of the car.
