Hydraulic system

The hydraulic pump draws oil from the reservoir via a fine-mesh sieve which prevents particles which could damage the pump from being drawn in. The pressurised oil proceeds from the pump onward to the oil filter.

The oil is led into the centre of the filter via a non-return valve. This prevents the pressurised oil in the accumulator from leaking out via the pump when it is not operating. Otherwise this would lead to a loss of pressure, at which the pump would largely have to operate continuously.

The oil flows from the oil filter to the accumulator, the function of which is to store a volume of oil under pressure (27-32 bar) in order that the XWD system shall have a rapid response time, and so that the electric motor does not need to operate the whole time. The oil is then led to the pressure control valve for the differential clutch (located in the differential clutch housing) or, if so equipped, to the pressure control valve for the limited slip differential clutch as well (located in the limited slip differential clutch housing).

The oil flows to the clutch's operating piston from the pressure control valve. Oil from the valve's spill port is led back to the oil reservoir.
