Repairs on broken wind deflector (CV)

VEHICLES CONCERNED

Saab 9-3 CV MY04- equipped with the wind deflector accessory.

BACKGROUND

High warranty cost for this product as too many deflectors are replaced instead of repaired.

CONDITIONS

Common failure types:

1. Broken locking devices (LH part no 12 833 927 / RH 12 833 928)

2. Loose holding brackets on rear edge

3. Broken frames

4. Broken net

SYMPTOM DESCRIPTION

1. Breaks when the customer folds it back and forth without first pulling the "arm" outwards on the axle.

2. Often breaks if something is loaded on top of them when they are stored in the trunk, if they are used as a handle to carry the deflector or if the customer forgets to raise the rear head rests when they dismount the deflector.

3. Observed breaks are related to situations when the customer tries to pack the deflector without opening the lock between the horisontal and vertical part of the deflector.

4. Known cases are caused by customer placing something with sharp edges/corners on the mounted deflector while they are unlocking the car or if they fold it down by pressing on the net instead of the frame

ACTION

1. Demonstration and information to the customer.

No replacements of complete deflector. The locking devices are available as separate spare parts.

2. Repositioning of the brackets as follows:

2.a. Cover the net with masonite/card board or similar as protection.

2.b. Grind away any remains of the old rivets.

2.c. Reposition the bracket one width towards the center of the deflector.

2.d. Drill 3 new holes 10 mm deep with a 4 mm drill

2.e. Assemble the bracket in the new position with 3 rivets part no 98 49 514

2.f. Use some black touch up paint if/where needed to improve looks before returning the car.

3. Demonstration and information to the customer.
