Brake caliper, rear, 4WD

To remove


1. Lift the rear of the car in order to remove the rear wheel at a later time.

2. Remove fuse 6 from instrument panel electrical centre 22 .

3. Depress the brake pedal slightly using a brake pedal clamp.

4. Loosen the handbrake adjustment so that the cables can be unhooked from the brake caliper. See Adjusting the handbrake cable .

5. Raise the car.

6. Remove the wheel.

7. Remove the bolts for the bushings (A) and fold down the anti-roll bar (B).


8. Remove the brake hose from the hydraulic body (A).


9. Remove the handbrake cable (B) from the hydraulic body.

10. Remove the retaining spring (C) from the brake caliper.

11. Remove the protective covers (D) and remove the hydraulic body.

12. Remove the outer and inner brake pads.

13. Clean the inside of the brake caliper and check the dust covers.

14. Remove the carrier from the steering swivel member (E).



To fit


1. Clean the contact surfaces between the steering swivel member and the brake caliper carrier.

2. Fit the brake caliper carrier to the steering swivel member. Apply 74 96 268 Thread locking adhesive to the bolts.

Tightening torque 130 Nm +45° (96 lbf ft +45°)

3. Screw in the brake piston (A) if necessary with 89 96 969 Resetting tool (B) and 89 96 977 Adapter (C).

Important

Check that the rubber gaiter does not turn when the brake piston is screwed in. Otherwise cracks may appear in the gaiter.



4. Lubricate the pad sliding and contact surfaces with Special paste .


5. Fit the brake pads.

6. Fit the hydraulic body.

Tightening torque 28 Nm (21 lbf ft)

7. Fit the protective covers (D).


8. Fit the retaining spring (C) to the brake caliper.

9. Fit the handbrake cable (B) to the hydraulic body.

10. Fit the brake hose (A) with new seals on the hydraulic body.

Tightening torque: 40 Nm (30 lbf ft)

11. Remove the brake pedal clamp and refit fuse 6 in the instrument panel electrical centre 22.

12. Bleed the brake system .

13. Adjust the handbrake.

14. Fold up the anti-roll bar (B) and fit the bolts for the bushings (A).

Tightening torque 30 Nm (23 lbf ft)


15. Fit the wheel .

16. Lower the car.

17. Depress the brake pedal repeatedly in order to press out the brake piston and the handbrake self adjustment.

18. Check the operation of the foot brake and handbrake.
