Steering gear, B284, 4WD, LHD

Important

Scrupulous cleanliness must always be observed during all work with hydraulic components.


Important

Always use wing covers when working in the engine bay.


To remove


1. Suction the fluid out of the reservoir.

2. Secure the steering wheel in the straight-ahead position, for example using woven tape to secure it to the dashboard.

3. Raise the car.

4. Remove the front wheels.

5. Remove the nut (A) securing the track rod ends to the steering swivel members.


6. Remove the track rod using 87 91 287 Puller, 150 mm .

7. Remove the anti-roll bar .

8. Suspend the steering gear with a 83 95 212 Strap in the rear torque arm.

9. Place a receptacle under the car. Detach the delivery line (A) and the return line (B) from the steering gear. Plug the lines.


10. Remove the steering shaft joint (C) from the steering gear and remove the clip. Detach the strap and lower the steering gear.


To fit


1. Suspend the steering gear with a 83 95 212 Strap in the rear torque arm.

2. Fit the steering shaft joint (C) to the steering gear. Clean the threads and apply Thread locking adhesive, Loctite 242 to the threads.

Tightening torque 30 Nm (22 lbf ft)

Warning

Check that the bolt fits into the groove on the pinion shaft.



3. Fit the delivery line (A) and return line (B) to the steering gear. Fit new O-rings.

Tightening torque 12 Nm (9 lbf ft)


4. Remove the strap.

5. Fit the anti-roll bar .

6. Fit the track rod ends (A) to the steering swivel members.

Tightening torque 35 Nm (26 lbf ft)


7. Wipe away any fluid from the subframe.

8. Refit the wheels .

9. Lower the car to the floor.

10. Remove the tape or other means used to prevent the steering wheel from moving.

11. Fill the power steering fluid according to specification, bleed the power steering system and check for leaks.

12. Carry out a wheel alignment .
