To remove

Warning

The cooling system is under pressure. Hot coolant and steam can escape.

- Open the cap slowly to release the pressure.

- Carelessness can cause eye and burn injuries


Important

Always use wing covers when working in the engine bay.



1. Drain the coolant. See Draining, cooling system .

2. Remove the bolt (A) from the coolant pipe mounting on the front of the engine.


3. Lower the car.

4. Remove the battery and Battery cover, bottom, B284 .

5. Move the coolant reservoir aside.

6. Remove the upper heat shield (A) of the catalytic converter.


7. Remove the lower heat shield (A) of the catalytic converter.


8. Aut: Detach the cable duct (A) from the gearbox and move the duct aside.


9. Remove the bolt (A) holding the coolant pipe in place.


10. Detach the pipe (B) from the thermostat housing. Collect any spill.

11. Detach the coolant pipe (C) running from the radiator to the thermostat housing.

12. Remove the thermostat housing (D). At the same time, press the coolant pipe to the radiator forward.


To fit


1. Clean gasket residue from the sealing surface of the engine block.

2. Fit the thermostat housing (D) using a new seal. Apply Vaseline to the seal with Vaseline and fit it on the engine block.

Tightening torque 10 Nm (7 lbf ft)

3. Attach the coolant pipe (C) using a new O-ring lightly coated with Vaseline. Do not tighten the bolt until the front bracket is fitted.

4. Attach the pipe (B) to the heater assembly using a new O-ring lightly coated with Vaseline.

5. Fit the bolt (A) holding the coolant pipe in place.

6. Aut: Fit the cable duct (A) to the gearbox.


7. Raise the car.

8. Fit the bolt (A) of the coolant pipe bracket.


9. Lower the car.

10. Tighten the bolt of the coolant pipe to the thermostat housing.

11. Pressure test the cooling system, see Cooling system, pressure testing .

12. Fit the lower heat shield (A) of the catalytic converter.


13. Fit the upper heat shield (A) of the catalytic converter.


14. Fit the coolant reservoir.

15. Fit Battery cover, bottom, B284 .

16. Fit the battery.

17. Top up coolant. See Bleeding and charging the cooling system (B284) .

18. Carry out Procedures after reconnecting the battery
