Cleanliness and accuracy

A car engine is a combination of many turned, ground, smoothed and polished surfaces, with tolerances which are measured in ten-thousandths of an inch. When any internal engine part is to be services, accuracy and cleanliness are important. A generous coating of engine oil should be applied to friction surfaces during fitting in order to protect and lubricate these surfaces during the initial work element. For this entire section, thorough cleaning and protection of machined surfaces and friction surfaces form part of the repair procedure. This is regarded as normal workshop practice even where this is not stated expressly in the text.

When valve train components are removed for servicing, they should be stored in order. During fitting, they should be positioned in the same place and with the same contact surfaces that they had when they were removed.
