Diagnosis of oil consumption (A20NFT/LHU)

High oil consumption, which is not due to leakage, means that 0.9 litres (1 qt) engine oil, or more, is consumed within 3 200 km (2 000 miles). The reasons for high oil consumption involve the following conditions:

External oil leaks

Tighten the screws and/or replace gaskets and oil seals if necessary.

Incorrect oil level or incorrect readings for oil level

With the car on level ground, let adequate time pass so that the oil can flow down into the oil pan and then check the oil level.

Incorrect oil viscosity

Use the SAE viscosity recommended for the prevailing temperatures.

Continuous driving at high speed and/or difficult conditions for use.

Restrictions in the crankcase ventilation system or malfunctions in components

Worn valve guides and/or valve stem oil seals or a seal is missing

Ream guides and fit oversized service valves and/or new valve stem oil seals.

Piston rings that are broken, incorrectly fitted, worn or not seated correctly

Allow enough time so that the rings have had time to become seated. Replace broken or worn rings if necessary.

Piston incorrectly fitted or misaligned
